The next season of GM Design’s You Make A Difference Program (YM@D) is beginning this January, to apply, please review the details below:
ART INSTRUCTORS:
The Outreach & Development Team at GM Design is offering students (7th-12th grade) a 7-week all-virtual course in automotive sketching and sculpting utilizing the Microsoft Teams platform. The class will meet once per week on Thursdays from 4-6 p.m. starting on January 6th. We will have a kick-off session on Thursday, December 9th from 4-6 p.m..
Please support us in identifying students from your school that may have the interest, talent, and passion to explore creative careers in automotive design and sculpting. We will be admitting candidates by conducting portfolio reviews based on the criteria outlined below. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have using the email address: [email protected] (feel free to share with your art students.)
STUDENTS (Parents FYI):
In this program, students work virtually with professional mentors – Creative Designers and Sculptors – who volunteer their talent and time. Mentors work with students teaching basic transportation design, color & material design, and will share sculpting demonstrations.
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO APPLY: (Step 1 & Step 2 due November 28th)

1. Write a paragraph (500 words maximum) consisting of a short bio. Include your interests, artistic background, and ideas on why a career in design or sculpting might be something that would interest you.
2. Send images of your artistic pursuits thus far with your most recent work first. Please pay attention to how your art looks on a high-definition monitor, especially if it did not start out as digital media. Poor scans and fuzzy cell-phone photographs will be disqualified. You may also caption images with title, description, or both if you desire.
3. Title of your portfolio MUST have your last name in it. Example: YM@D_app_C._Smith.pdf
4. Suggested number of images: 10 - 25 images spread out over 5-20 pages
5. Two of your original sketches must be of a car or truck exterior. “Extra credit” will be given for including vehicle interior sketches and/or product design examples such as interior components.

HIGH SCHOOL ART INSTRUCTORS

GM Design Educational Relations is offering a 17-week course in automotive sketching and sculpting. The class will meet once per week on Thursdays from October 10, 2019 to March 12, 2020 at the GM Design Center in Warren, Michigan from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Please support us in identifying students from your school that may have the interest, talent, and passion to explore creative careers in automotive design and sculpting. We will be admitting candidates by conducting portfolio reviews based on the criteria outlined below. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have using the email address: [email protected] (feel free to print and share with your art students and/or hang this document on bulletin boards or high traffic areas).

STUDENTS (parents: FYI)

Learn the art and science of how to create a vehicle exterior born from your influences and ideas. The course will start with basic perspective drawing and shading on paper and quickly move to sculpting 1/10 scale models. Students will ‘Compete for the Brief’ and select their preference for working in teams of two as either a creative sculptor or creative designer. Additional details of the course will be rolled out on first day of orientation: October 10, 2018 from 6 – 8 p.m. at GM Design Center Main Lobby, 6350 Harley Earl Blvd., Warren, Mich. 48092 (meeting location: Flexible Meeting Center (FMC), students/parents will be escorted).

Step 2:

1. Write a paragraph (500 words maximum) consisting of a short bio. Include your interests, artistic background, and ideas on why a career in design or sculpting might be something that would interest you.
2. Send images of your artistic pursuits thus far with your most recent work first. Please pay attention to how your art looks on a high-definition monitor, especially if it did not start out as digital media. Poor scans and fuzzy cell-phone photographs will be disqualified. You may also caption images with title, description, or both if you desire.
3. Title of your portfolio MUST have your last name in it. Example: YM@D_app_C._Smith.pdf
4. Suggested number of images: 10 - 25 images spread out over 5-20 pages
5. Two of your original sketches must be of a car or truck exterior. “Extra credit” will be given for including vehicle interior sketches and/or product design examples such as interior components.
6. Portfolio layout should be submitted electronically as landscape format 8.5" 11.0" Adobe Reader .pdf format. You must limit your .pdf to no larger than 10 mb. PLEASE SUBMIT ONE PDF FILE ONLY CONTAINING ALL YOUR IMAGES – in the landscape format.

The due date for your portfolio submission is Tuesday, October 1, 2019 at 8:00 a.m. Students will be notified via email of their status by Friday, October 4.
