💔 $1,700 TODAY — AND THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING FOR TWO OF OUR SENIOR BOYS.

Today was a big medical day for two of our senior boys, Buck and Caine. While we got some answers, we also came home with more questions and the realization that there is a lot more ahead.
BUCK ❤️

Buck had surgery today to remove the mass from his mouth, and thankfully, his surgery went well. The mass is being sent for pathology, and now we wait for those results.

During his workup, Buck’s radiographs also showed some changes in his lungs. Buck is heartworm positive and currently undergoing treatment, so we are hoping what they are seeing is related to his heartworm disease. But we can’t assume that. He will need better imaging, which will then be sent out for a radiologist to review.
We are incredibly grateful that his surgery went well, but we aren’t finished. We need the pathology results, we need answers about his lungs, and then we’ll determine what comes next.

CAINE ❤️
Caine saw Dr. Marino at LIVS today and had bloodwork and sedated radiographs.
There is some arthritis in his hips, but that does not appear to explain what has been happening with his back end. The bigger concern at this point appears to be neurological/spinal, with possibilities including a bulging disc or stenosis.
Surgery may ultimately be part of Caine’s future, but we need a much clearer picture before any decisions are made.

Dr. Marino is reviewing everything with his team and putting together a plan, which will most likely include an MRI. We’ll have a longer discussion tomorrow once they’ve had a chance to review everything. For now, Caine has some new medications to help him while we figure out the next step.

And because Caine has also been struggling with ongoing skin problems, dermatology evaluated him further today. He has been started on another treatment protocol, and we are really hoping this is finally the one that gets his skin under control.

TODAY ALONE COST APPROXIMATELY $1,700.
And unfortunately, that is not the end of either boy’s medical care.
Buck still needs pathology, additional imaging and radiology review. Caine will very likely need an MRI, and what happens after that will depend on what they find.

All of this is happening while Daisy Mae’s major surgery is October 8th and we still need approximately $3,700. We still have $2,600 left on Chong’s TPLO surgery. Nashville is still undergoing medical evaluation, and Lily continues to need medical care. And those are only some of the animals currently depending on us.

This is why we simply cannot get ahead of the medical bills.

We made a commitment to these animals, and we will see them through. But we truly need help.

❤️ OUR SENIOR BOY CAINE HAS HIS ORTHOPEDIC CONSULT TOMORROW — AND WE’RE HOPING FOR ANSWERS.

If you’ve followed Road to Home for a while, you probably know our boy Caine. ❤️

Caine came to us after spending more than a year in a Long Island shelter. He eventually became one of our Forever Foster dogs, which means when we made a commitment to him, we made it for life.

Our senior boy has been through a lot over the years. He was diagnosed with mast cell cancer, and thankfully, he has done incredibly well. He continues with his oncology follow-ups and has had no recurrence.

He has also dealt with ongoing skin issues and has been hospitalized twice for gastrointestinal problems. Because of those issues, Caine has been on prescription food that costs us approximately $143 every month.

And now we have a new concern.

Caine has been having a progressive problem with his leg, and tomorrow he will finally be seen for an orthopedic consultation. We need to find out what is going on, what can be done to help him and what the next step will be.

We don’t know yet what tomorrow will bring — whether he will need additional diagnostics, treatment or something more. Tomorrow is about getting answers.

This is what our Forever Foster Program is all about. When we make that commitment to an animal, we don’t stop when they get older. We don’t stop when another medical issue comes up. Caine is ours, and we will do whatever he needs.

His appointment also comes at a time when our medical fund is already being stretched in every direction. Buck is having surgery tomorrow, Daisy Mae’s surgery is October 8th, we still have a balance on Chong’s TPLO surgery, Nashville is waiting for his cardiology consultation, and Lily continues to need medical care.

But tonight, we’re asking everyone to keep our big, lovable senior boy in your thoughts. ❤️

They are bonded and need to stay together. They are wonderful with people, great with children, good with other dogs and both are healthy. Through everything that has changed in their lives, they have always had each other.

They are simply two older girls who need someone willing to give them a chance.

And yes, we know adopting two senior dogs is a commitment. That's exactly why we're asking anyone considering applying to please talk it over with everyone in your household first. Think about having two dogs, their ages and the commitment you're making, and make sure everyone is truly on board before asking the rescue and our volunteers to go through the entire application and approval process.

These girls have had enough uncertainty in their lives. We don't want another "maybe" for Millie and Lulu. We want the person who looks at these two beautiful faces and says, "You're both coming home."

They have so much love left to give. They deserve soft beds, a couch to share, walks, treats, belly rubs and someone who doesn't care that the numbers next to their names are 12 and 10.

They deserve to finally unpack their bags.

❤️ NASHVILLE UPDATE — THIS LITTLE GUY IS DOING AMAZING!

We have such a good Nashville update to share. ❤️ He hasn’t had any episodes in the past week, and his foster mom says he is doing phenomenally!

We are hoping to finally get his cardiology consultation done this week. It has taken a lot of jumping through hoops just to get everything lined up, but we are getting there. After the neurologist reviewed videos of Nashville’s episodes, cardiology was recommended as the next step, so we’re anxious to get that consultation done and hopefully learn more.

In the meantime, Nashville is busy showing everyone just how much personality can fit into 13 pounds. ❤️ When he is happy and comfortable, he rolls right over onto his back. He LOVES being on your lap and apparently doesn’t believe he should have to wait for an invitation — he will launch himself from wherever he is just to get there. Personal space is still very much Nashville’s to claim. 😁

He’s also a big fan of wearing sweatshirts, and luckily his foster brother Charlie is too. Yesterday, Nashville and Charlie went for their first walk together! 🐾❤️
Their relationship is so sweet to watch. His incredible foster mom says they’re doing a very gentle little dance with each other about possibly playing. Nashville watches Charlie and copies what he does, which is pretty adorable. He’s learning from him and becoming more comfortable every day.

For a little dog who came to us after living such a neglected life, seeing him now — going for walks, bonding with Charlie, launching himself into laps and feeling safe enough to roll onto his back — means so much.

There are still medical questions we need answered, and we’re hoping the cardiologist will help us take the next step. But for today, Nashville is happy, loved and doing incredibly well. And that is definitely worth celebrating. ❤️

His medical care is still ongoing, and his upcoming cardiology consultation will be another expense for Road to Home. 💔 AND NOW IT’S BUCK. THE MEDICAL NEEDS JUST AREN’T STOPPING.

Just when we start making progress on one medical bill, another one lands in front of us.
This time, it’s Buck.

You may remember this sweet 8-year-old boy we pulled to safety from an overcrowded Alabama shelter. Since then, Buck has been living in a wonderful foster home, surrounded by the love and security he deserved all along.

His foster recently noticed a mass in his mouth and brought him to the vet. The vet wants it removed as soon as possible and sent out for pathology.

Buck’s surgery is scheduled for Tuesday, and the estimate is $700.
We don’t know what the pathology will show or what, if anything, he will need afterward. We’re taking this one step at a time. Right now, that means getting the mass removed and finding out exactly what we’re dealing with.

But this is happening while our medical expenses are already overwhelming.
We still have $2,600 left on Chong’s TPLO surgery. Daisy Mae has major surgery October 8th, with approximately $3,900 still to raise. And Caine has his orthopedic consultation on Tuesday — the very same day Buck is having surgery.

Nashville is still undergoing medical evaluation, Lily was just at the vet after developing stress colitis, and we still have Valley, her kittens and other animals whose ongoing veterinary care remains our responsibility.

Now add another $700 for Buck — before we even know what his pathology will tell us.

This is exactly why our medical intake remains closed. The pleas for help haven't stopped, but we have to be able to care for the animals we already said YES to.

Buck is already being treated for heartworm disease, but through everything he remains the same incredibly sweet, loving, easygoing senior boy his foster adores. ❤️

When we pulled Buck from that shelter, we made a commitment to him. We will do everything necessary to keep him healthy and comfortable, and when we have his pathology results, we’ll deal with whatever comes next.

Right now, Buck needs his $700 surgery on Tuesday, on top of medical expenses that are already stretching us beyond our limits.

💔 THESE PHOTOS WERE ONCE LILY'S “HAPPY TAILS.” TODAY, SHE IS LIVING IN BOARDING.
Please look through these photos, because they tell Lily's story — and the first ones are from the life she lost.

Lily went to the vet this morning and has developed stress colitis. She has been started on metronidazole, and while we hope to get it under control, the ongoing stress of being kenneled is taking a toll on her.

And when you look through these photos, you'll understand why this is so heartbreaking.

For more than six years, Lily had a home. She had her person, her couch, her blankets and the security of knowing where she belonged. We shared “Happy Tails” pictures of her sprawled across the furniture, sound asleep and completely content.
Then her person died, and Lily's entire world changed.
Road to Home and her best friend Michelle were there to help her through it. The third photo is Lily with Michelle at a hotel during that incredibly difficult time, while we tried to figure out what came next.

Eventually, Lily was adopted again. We thought she had found her second chance, and Lily settled right in. That picture of her belly-up and sound asleep on the couch? That's Lily in a home. That's Lily when she feels safe.

But only a few months later, that adoption ended too.
That is when Lily went into boarding. What was supposed to be temporary has gone on far too long.

And we cannot say enough about the people caring for her at Hounds Town in Metuchen. The owner and staff love Lily and go above and beyond for her. Michelle spends as much time with her as she can. The owner has even offered her own personal yard so Lily can get off the concrete, roll in the grass and have some time just being a dog. Last week, Michelle rented a Sniffspot for her for exactly the same reason.

Look at that last picture. That's our Lily. Rolling in the grass, being silly and happy. ❤️ Despite everything that has changed around her, Lily is still Lily. She just needs the chance to have a home again.

Everyone is doing everything they can.
But none of it replaces a home.

Lily is 9 years old and deaf. She needs an adult, quieter home where she can be the only pet. She has separation anxiety and, after everything she has been through, she needs time to trust. But once Lily trusts you, she bonds incredibly deeply with her person.

We are looking for a Forever Foster for Lily. Road to Home remains financially responsible for her medical care. And we will be there to help with her transition and getting her settled.

You also don't have to meet Lily and decide that day. Come spend time with her. Come back again. Let her learn that you're someone she can trust. Give yourself the chance to know the Lily that Michelle and all of us know and love.

She had a home for more than six years. She lost her person. She found another home and lost that too. And now, after all this time in boarding, her body is telling us that this is too much.
There has to be someone out there who will stay.

Please SHARE Lily. We need this post to reach beyond the people who already know her story. Her person may simply not have seen her yet.

❤️ GAGE HAS OFFICIALLY LEFT THE SHELTER! ❤️

This is the kind of update we LOVE to share. Gage is officially out of the Texas shelter and on his way to his very own FOREVER HOME! His new dad is excitedly waiting for him to arrive, and after everything this boy has been through, knowing where this journey ends makes us so incredibly happy.

Gage and his brother Grady entered the shelter together after their elderly owner could no longer keep up with two young, active dogs. They lost the only home they knew and suddenly found themselves living in a shelter.

Today, Gage’s life changes. ❤️

But his brother Grady is still there waiting, and we truly don’t understand why. While we celebrate Gage, we are hoping with everything we have that someone will see Grady and give him the same chance. We have shared him here on our page, and he is also available through our website at www.rthrs.com. Please take another look at this beautiful boy and SHARE him. His brother is going home. Now we need to get Grady out too.

We also need to give a huge thank you to Andrea and her amazing group of transport volunteers, who once again are helping an RTH dog travel the miles to his next chapter. These transports take a lot of coordination and a lot of people willing to give their time to help a dog they may never see again.

And thank you to Gage and Grady’s shelter advocates, who have worked tirelessly to get these boys seen and to connect with rescues that could give them a chance. Gage is on his way home today because so many people refused to give up on him.

It truly takes a team. From the shelter advocates, to rescue, to the transport volunteers, to the people who share our posts, and finally to the adopter waiting at the end of the journey. Every person is a piece of getting a dog from a shelter kennel to a home of their own.

❤️ CHONG IS FEELING BETTER… WHICH IS MAKING CRATE REST A LOT HARDER.

Our boy is making progress. ❤️ Chong has been getting some time outside in the sunshine with Madison, his favorite person, and he absolutely loves it. It gives him a safe break from his crate, some fresh air and time with the person he loves most.

Now that Chong is starting to feel better, he is definitely getting tired of crate rest. He doesn’t understand why he can’t be up on the couch or bed, or why all of his normal activities are still off limits. He’s feeling more like himself, but his leg still has a lot of healing to do, so we have to stick with the restrictions even when Chong thinks he’s ready for more. ❤️

That’s why those little breaks outside in the sunshine with Madison have become such a bright spot in his day. ☀️🐾

On Monday, we have to send video of Chong to his surgeon so they can see how he is moving and evaluate his progress. Then, in approximately four more weeks, he will have his follow-up X-rays to see how everything is healing.

So for now, it’s more rest, more patience and hopefully plenty of safe time outside enjoying the sunshine with his favorite person.

We’ve also made some progress on his surgery bill, but we still have approximately $2,600 left to pay. His surgery may be behind him, but unfortunately the bill is not. With so many other medical cases happening at the same time, we really need help continuing to bring that balance down.

FOR WAY TOO LONG, SHARING A SHELTER KENNEL. HOW AMAZING WOULD IT BE IF THEY LEFT TOGETHER?

Quincy and Ebony have been sitting at our shelter partner in Hillsboro, Texas. Through all of the noise, uncertainty and long days of shelter life, they have had one constant — each other.

They share a kennel. They play together. They relax together. And somewhere along the way, these two dogs who happened to end up in the same shelter became really good friends. ❤️

Do they HAVE to be adopted together? Absolutely not. Finding a wonderful home for either one of them is what matters most, and we would never let the possibility of separate homes stand in the way of either dog getting out of the shelter.
But seriously... how cool would it be if they got to leave together?

Quincy is a handsome 2½-year-old Kelpie mix. He can be a little shy when he first meets someone, but give him a little time and he warms up into a sweet, devoted boy. He loves other dogs and is neutered, up to date on vaccinations and heartworm negative.

Ebony is a beautiful 2½-year-old bully mix with a calm, easygoing personality. She is affectionate, dog-friendly, spayed, up to date on vaccinations and heartworm negative.

These two have already spent way too long waiting. Watching people come and go. So much time of shelter life when they should have been sleeping on couches, going for walks and knowing what it feels like to belong to someone.

Maybe there is someone out there with room for two. ❤️ But if not, please don't let that stop you from considering Quincy OR Ebony. They can go to separate homes, and we will be thrilled to see either one of them finally get the family they deserve.

They've helped each other through a very long wait. Now we need to help them get out.

❤️ WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT THE DOGS WHO ARE STILL WAITING.

We recently posted Mack, a small Mini Doodle with anxiety issues and very specific requirements for his home, and the response was overwhelming. The inquiries came flooding in so quickly that we could barely keep up. And please understand — we are grateful. We want Mack to find the right home just as much as anyone else.

But it also made us stop and think.

Sometimes a smaller, fluffy dog catches people’s attention immediately. They see that adorable face before they see the anxiety, the specific needs, the restrictions or the work that may be involved.

Meanwhile, so many other dogs are still waiting. The bigger dogs. The Pit Bulls. The seniors. The dogs who have been overlooked for months. The dogs who came from shelters and are still waiting for someone to simply give them a chance.

There are dogs with medical needs, shy dogs who need patience, and dogs who aren’t the trendy breed, the perfect age or the easiest story. We post them, share them, tell their stories and beg for someone to notice them — and sometimes almost nothing happens.

That is one of the hardest parts of rescue. Every dog deserves to be seen.

So if you’ve been thinking about adding a dog to your family, please look beyond the dog getting all the attention today. Maybe your dog is the senior who has been quietly waiting. Maybe it’s the big goofy dog everyone scrolls past. Maybe it’s the Pit Bull who needs someone to look past the label.

We will continue working through Mack’s inquiries and finding the home that is right for him. ❤️ But please don’t forget about all the others. They are waiting too, and some of them have been waiting a very, very long time.
