POLLEN ALERT for the Walpole Area

9.2 = Medium HIGH

Posted: Tuesday, 09-June 2026

- - - - -

Pollen Index: 9.2
Pollen Level: medium-high
Predominant Pollen: Oak, Mulberry and Grass.

The amount of pollen in the air for Wednesday will be falling but will remain in the high range. This relief in pollen levels is caused in part by rising humidity, weakening winds and expected precipitation in the evening which tends to wash pollen out of the air.

⚠️ Massachusetts Heat Wave and World Cup 2026 Safety Advisory

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) has issued a heat wave advisory for the next seven days across the state. With World Cup 2026 soccer events bringing large crowds to Boston and other cities, officials are reminding everyone to take precautions against heat-related illness.

Hot weather can be dangerous, especially for older adults, young children, pregnant people, outdoor workers, and those with chronic health conditions. MDPH recommends drinking plenty of water, limiting alcohol, avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day, and taking breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Keep food cold and check on neighbors or family members who may be at risk.

Outdoor workers should drink cool water every 15–20 minutes, wear light, breathable clothing, apply SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, and rest in shaded areas. Employers are urged to train staff to recognize and respond to signs of heat illness.

Residents can find more information and safety tools through MDPH’s Extreme Heat hub, Unhealthy Heat Forecast, Community Heat Resources, Unhealthy Heat Action Toolkit, and Celebrate Safely guidance for summer events.

OPOSSUM

Opossums live short, difficult lives, yet they spend their nights doing work many people never see.

Most only live about one to two years in the wild. They move through backyards, forests, roadsides, and neighborhoods after dark, searching for food while avoiding cars, dogs, predators, and harsh weather. Their lives are brief, but their role in nature is meaningful.

Opossums help clean the world around you. They eat pests, insects, carrion, and sometimes even venomous snakes. They also help reduce ticks, which can carry disease. In their quiet way, they support the balance of the places they pass through.

Still, many people fear them because of how they look or because they appear at night. But opossums are usually shy, gentle animals. When scared, they often freeze, hiss, drool, or play dead because they want to survive, not attack.

Kindness can be simple. Give them space. Do not harm them. Slow down when you see one near the road. Let them keep doing the work nature gave them.

Opossums may not live long, but they leave the world cleaner than they found it.
