Surveying can’t be learned from textbooks alone.
It requires mentorship, real-world experience, and guidance from those who’ve done the work before. That’s why educating the next generation of surveyors matters so much. We all learned from someone.
If you’ve never had a survey done, it’s easy to underestimate what’s involved. Surveying isn’t a trade where you show up and start measuring. It’s research, coordination, and interpretation, all working together to protect your investment.
Surveying isn’t something you master quickly.
It takes years of field experience, problem-solving, and learning from mistakes to truly understand how land, records, and boundaries interact. That experience shows up in the final result!
A survey doesn’t start in the field. It starts at a desk, researching deeds, reviewing old records, studying maps from decades (or centuries) ago, and building a foundation of information before the first stake goes in the ground. Accuracy depends on preparation.
Doing the work right isn’t just technical. It’s ethical.
Surveying decisions affect neighbors, property rights, and long-term outcomes. That’s why accuracy, research, and patience matter, even when timelines or budgets are tight.
In 1973, Juliano Associates didn’t begin in a corporate office. It started in a basement.
Christopher Juliano’s father, a civil and town engineer, had spent years working for others before deciding he wanted autonomy and ownership over his work. That decision became the foundation of Juliano Associates, a firm built on responsibility, accuracy, and trust.
Christopher grew up around the business. At thirteen, after getting suspended from school, his “punishment” was going to work. He spent the day in the woods placing targets and painting survey markers for an aerial survey, and he loved it.
Although he graduated from UConn in 1992 with a degree in civil engineering, surveying kept pulling him back. Engineering followed patterns. Surveying didn’t. Every project required research, interpretation, and problem-solving. No two sites were the same.
Working alongside his father shaped how he leads today. Surveying isn’t just technical, it’s ethical. It requires researching decades-old records, interpreting incomplete information, and refusing to rush work even when timelines are tight.
One proud moment came when a competing firm publicly acknowledged Juliano Associates for resolving a boundary issue that could have significantly impacted a project. Recognition from peers reinforces what the firm stands for.
Today, the team remains intentionally small. The focus isn’t scale, it’s precision, service, and doing the work right.
For homeowners and developers alike, the goal is simple: work with someone as invested in the outcome as you are.
