Julie loves to help young people find adventure and excitement in food and physical activity instead of looking at it through the lens of dieting and rules. She teaches mindful eating habits for all ages and can provide help for the picky eater or emotional eater. Fun fact: Julie grew up on a pinto bean farm in the middle of Wyoming.

"My goal is to lose weight, so I always choose the low calorie or light option"

Unfortunately, we hear this statement more times in a week than we can count on one hand. And we get how years of diets and diet culture make you think this way!

But what happens when we always choose that low calorie or light option?

Very nutritious food groups become demonized 👿, like whole grains, starchy vegetables, dietary fats, fruits and more!

Always choosing the lower calorie option may lead to undernourishment (not eating enough), and increases the chance of developing nutrient deficiencies and feeling very, very tired.

Plus if you are constantly eating too little, there is usually a breaking point. Choosing the lower calorie option leaves many people feeling restricted, which often leads to cravings overindulging (eating more than we planned to or even wanted to!) Not to mention, if you're very, very tired you're going to gravitate to the quick and energy dense foods.

So whether your goal is to lose weight, regain health, optimize sports performance, or nourish your family, the answer is to find balance and to choose foods that will keep you feeling satisfied!

Have you every chose the lower calorie option instead of the one you knew would make you feel satisfied?

Stuck in a dieting mindset? 🤨 Here are three ways you can find balance and increase your energy this week!

🍌 🍳 🥑 🍞 Prioritize having a breakfast in the morning. A new study found no benefit to waiting to eat your first meal of the day over having that balanced breakfast earlier on!

🥦 🍍 🍇 🍓 Incorporate more color into each and every meal. Fruits and vegetables are nutrient dense and add volume to your plate!

🌾 Replace refined grains like white bread and pasta with whole grains more often. Try oatmeal, popcorn, farro, barley, quinoa for a new spin.

These are some of our core approaches at Balanced Nutrition. Comment below which approach you're taking on this week!
