Not all sunscreen ingredients are created equal, and the FDA has actually weighed in on which ones have enough safety data to back them up.

The classification is called GRASE, which stands for Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective. Right now, only two sunscreen ingredients have earned that designation: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Both are mineral filters, meaning they work at the surface of the skin rather than being absorbed into the bloodstream, which is a key part of why they cleared the current standard.

That doesn't mean every other sunscreen on the market is dangerous. Twelve common chemical ingredients, including oxybenzone and avobenzone, are still legally used while researchers gather more data on their absorption rates and potential effects. Two ingredients, PABA and trolamine salicylate, have been proposed as not GRASE because the risk-to-benefit ratio didn't hold up.
What this means practically: if you prefer to keep what your skin absorbs to a minimum, a mineral sunscreen is your clearest option based on what we know right now.
