🤠⭐ MCSO History Spotlight ⭐🤠

This week in our McLennan County Sheriff’s Office History Spotlight, we recognize Sheriff J. D. Wallace, who served McLennan County from 1864 to 1865 during one of the most difficult periods in Texas and American history.

Sheriff Wallace held office during the final years of the American Civil War. Across Texas, many men were serving in the Confederate Army or state military forces, while families and local communities faced labor shortages, rising costs, and limited access to clothing, medicine, and other essential goods. His term also coincided with the end of the war and the beginning of a difficult period of political and social change.

Although few readily available records detail Sheriff Wallace’s individual actions, Texas sheriffs of this era generally carried broad responsibilities. These included preserving the peace, serving legal process, executing warrants, making arrests, and overseeing prisoners and the county jail.

Sheriff Wallace’s service places him among the early officeholders who led McLennan County during a pivotal chapter in its history.

Today, we honor Sheriff J. D. Wallace for his service and recognize his place in the long history of the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office.
