Meet our Pathways Intern: Josue Barboza ✨
Along with the rest of the crew, Josue worked on fuel reduction, earned multiple certifications, and helped serve his community.
Josue Barbosa did not always know he wanted to become a firefighter/paramedic. It wasn't until participating in Vista Fire Rescue's Fire Interns Program that he discovered his passion for the fire service. Wanting to continue building on that experience, Josue joined Vista Fire Rescue's Pathways Program, where he strengthened his technical skills, developed resilience, and found a crew that quickly became like family.

Say hello to our newest group of EMTs, who just finished orientation with Captain Derek Fried and the EMT cadre. Today, they hit the streets with our crews.

🗓️October is Fire Prevention Month, and we want to take a moment to recognize the work our Pathways interns are doing for the community, including fuel reduction and vegetation management at Brengle Terrace Park.
Fuel reduction is vital in helping prevent wildfires, but project areas are carefully monitored first to minimize impacts on local wildlife. Although the work takes place after nesting season, each area is still surveyed for active nests before work begins.
As shown in the video, thinning is completed by hauling brush by hand and using pole saws and chainsaws rather than heavy machinery to reduce environmental impacts.
Interns are trained in ground and ladder fuel reduction, removing only dead, dying, and invasive vegetation. Their work helps reduce wildfire risk while supporting healthier landscapes throughout our community.

Open House takes place each Saturday from 10/03/2026 through 11/07/2026, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. We'll have activities and demonstrations set up throughout the event, so make sure to stop by each one!
Kids who complete the passport book earn a Vista Fire Rescue Junior Firefighter Badge and an exclusive Halloween Sticker! Here's how it works. Pick up a passport book at the Welcome and Information Table, collect a sticker at all five Activity Stops, then bring your completed book back to the Welcome and Information Table to claim both prizes.

Today we pause to honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and recognize the extraordinary courage of the first responders who answered the call without hesitation. As we mark the 25th anniversary of this tragic event let's take a moment to remember the firefighters, law enforcement, EMS personnel, and countless others whose bravery continues to inspire us.
Their legacy reminds us of the strength found in service and our commitment to protecting those we serve.
We will never forget.
🚒Don’t have weekend plans yet? Now you do!
Vista Fire Rescue is opening its doors to the public each Saturday starting October 3 to November 7. Only one fire station will be open to the public each weekend so make sure to double check the dates and locations!
We'll have activities set up throughout the fire station. Start at the Welcome and Information table to pick up your blank passport sticker book, then visit all five activity stops to collect your activity completion stickers. Once your sticker book is complete, bring it back to the Welcome and Information table to claim your Vista Fire Rescue Junior Firefighter Badge and an exclusive Vista Fire Rescue Halloween Sticker. Both prizes go to visitors who finish the whole book, so don't miss a stop!

UPDATE: Evacuation order downgraded to an evacuation warning.
Crews will remain on scene for an extended period of time dealing with hot spots. IF you are outside and smell smoke, or see ash, that is a normal byproduct of the fire. Forward progress has been stopped.

There is an active vegetation fire in the area of 1200 Vale Terrace Drive, near Brengle Terrace Park. There is an evacuation order for zone SDC-0503, and an evacuation warning for zone SDC-0568. If you are under and evacuation order, a temporary evacuation point has been set up at Vista High School.

Over the past several weeks , they’ve shown up with curiosity, determination, and a willingness to learn. Through their hard work and dedication, they’ve made a lasting impact on our community, and we couldn’t be prouder of everything they’ve accomplished.
This program wouldn’t have been possible without the support and collaboration of so many people. A heartfelt thank you to our Workforce Superintendent for leading this initiative, and to our amazing partners at Vista Unified School District and the California Conservation Corps for helping make this opportunity a reality.
✨To our interns: thank you for your commitment, your positive attitude, and the difference you’ve made along the way. We’re so proud of each of you and can’t wait to see where your journey takes you next.

What is the bright yellow engine behind all the blue uniforms?
That engine is a Cal Oes engine provided to fire departments by Cal OES. Those engines are staffed and sent out to help when emergencies happen, not only in the state of California, but out of state as well.
OES Engine 408 from Vista is currently part of a “strike team” that was sent out to help our neighbors in Oregon, before being called up to Washington. Strike teams are made up of five engines from different fire departments who team up with one mission- provide help when needed. This strike team includes engines from Vista Fire Rescue, Chula Vista, Hemet Fire Department, National City Fire Department, and two strike team leaders from San Diego Fire Department. All personnel are well and working hard.
