🎶 Somewhere under the rainbow 🎶

A few weeks ago we celebrated achieving Magnet with Distinction for nursing excellence and our theme was Wizard of Oz.

How fitting this rainbow showed up over our hospital this morning! 🌈 🌅

💙 A little extra comfort goes a long way. 💙

Every week, our Emergency Department team at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital is supported by Healing Touch practitioners, who offer gentle relaxation techniques, light massage, and calming energy‑based practices to help reduce stress, promote relaxation, and restore balance during demanding shifts.

To make the visits even brighter, our therapy dogs—like Apollo and Scarlett 🐾—stop by to spread smiles and comfort.

We’re grateful for these moments of care that support those who give so much every day.

In honor of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, Sentara Princess Anne Hospital welcomed more than 600 runners this weekend for our annual Don’t Sit on Colon Cancer 5K.

According to the American Cancer Society, colon cancer is projected to become the leading cause of cancer death among Americans under age 50 by 2026. This event helps raise awareness about the importance of early detection and routine screening starting at age 45.

Together, survivors, thrivers, patients, families, and healthcare team members came together to celebrate life, honor loved ones, and stand united in the fight against colon cancer.

We are moved by Ron Dixon's story ❤️

Ron is 42, a father of 5 boys, and was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in June 2025. Since then, it has progressed to stage 4.

"I don't want to leave my friends and family. I want to see my boys grow and be happy," said Ron.

During his stay at SPAH, Ron and his family have formed a close bond with the staff. One moment that stayed with him happened while he was being wheeled to an EKG, when a nurse said, “Hey Ron, I’ll see you when you get back, ok,” and he replied, “Yes ma’am.”

Ron described the nurses as angels - like mother figures.

"They didn't come in and say, 'Okay, we're gonna stab your arm.' These ladies were like angels. It was like blowing my mind."

Ron's sister expressed her gratitude by crafting badge holders for the staff. Team members would stop by Ron's room to pick out their favorite.

"She brought in bags and bags and said, 'I want everybody who touches you to get one of these,'" said Ron with a proud smile on his face.

We are cheering Ron and his family on, always 💙

🎉 We did it! SPAH has received Magnet with Distinction from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)!! 🎉

With our Wizard of Oz–inspired theme, our amazing nurses showed why this place truly has heart, courage, and brilliance. 🌈🪄

Here’s what makes this achievement even more magical:

🏆 15 exemplars - the MOST ever in the Sentara system
🚑 The second hospital in Hampton Roads to earn Magnet with Distinction
🎓 80%+ of our RNs hold a bachelor’s degree or higher
📈 Nurse engagement exceeded the national benchmark at 80.9%
🔄 Nurse turnover stayed under 10%
🌟 3 Inpatient + 3 Ambulatory Nurse-Sensitive Measures
💬 6 Patient Experience exemplars (4 Inpatient, 2 Ambulatory)

This honor places SPAH among the elite. Fewer than 10% of U.S. hospitals achieve Magnet status, and only about 75 hospitals worldwide have earned Magnet with Distinction.

Turns out, everything we needed was here all along 💛

✨There’s truly no place like SPAH. ✨

We love a good reunion — especially one like this. 💙

We welcomed Virginia Beach Firefighter and EMT Biersan Gomez back to Sentara Princess Anne Hospital to reconnect with the coworker, first responders, and care teams who helped save his life after a stroke. Team members from Virginia Beach EMS and Virginia Beach Fire Department were in attendance! Our Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance wasn't able to attend but they played a pivotal role in saving Biersan's life.

From FAST thinking in the field to seamless hospital care, this is what teamwork look like. We’re so grateful to be part of Biersan’s story.

💙 Honoring Our Everyday Hero, MaryAnn Conrad 💙

Our team had a blast filming with Kurt Williams and WTKR News 3 to spotlight someone who means so much to us, our beloved MaryAnn Conrad.

MaryAnn has been volunteering at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital since it opened in 2011 and has volunteered with Sentara for a total of 23 years.

At 93 years young, she continues to brighten our halls, serve in our gift shop, and lead a team that handmakes the cutest knitted hats for our newborns. 🎀🧶

Her kindness, energy, and joy inspire everyone she meets. We’re so proud to see her recognized as an Everyday Hero, a title she wears so well. 💛

Thank you, MaryAnn, for making millions of little moments that matter.
