I don’t sing this song often when I play. Not because I don’t want to or because it’s super hard for me to sing it at the level it deserves to be performed. I guess it’s because I feel like I’m selling a version of my former self.. but on the right night with the right crowd and a good mic/mix.. it reminds me and those folks in the crowd of a really special moment in time where I had to step up and hit a Home-run every week. I’m not Kelly Clarkson or Chris Daughtry or Carrie Underwood—I Know that. I don’t get invited back to the show to sing my greatest hits and relive all that was. I’m good with that. I’m healthy, my family and friends are all healthy; I have money to pay my bills and my dogs are asleep next to me. God has been and is good. (If I’m lucky Kat will have homemade bread coming out of the oven in about an hour) Pretty good, right?? American Idol has given me countless good memories and opportunities.. Truly! Too many to name. It’s also come with more grief and heartache than I will ever be able to explain. I asked my dad what he would tell folks every time they ask: ‘Well what was that like?’ His response: ‘You tell ‘em.. it ain’t all good and it ain’t all bad.’ And that, ladies and gentlemen.. is about as perfect as you can sum it up in so many words. Go do something today for the first time—Who knows.. you might be right on the cusp of a life changing experience!
