When you call 911, every second counts. While emergencies are often unexpected, taking a few simple steps ahead of time can help first responders provide care as quickly and safely as possible.

Here are a few ways you can prepare:

💊 Keep an up-to-date medication and allergy list.
Have a current list of your medications, dosages, allergies, and medical conditions in an easy-to-find location. This information helps EMS crews provide the safest care possible.

📞 Know your emergency contacts.
Keep the names and phone numbers of family members or trusted friends readily available in case they need to be notified.

🏠 Make sure your address is clearly visible.
House and business numbers should be easy to see from the street—both during the day and at night. Clear address markings help emergency responders find you without delay.

🫶 Stay as calm as possible.
We know emergencies can be stressful, but remaining calm can help you think clearly and communicate important information to dispatchers and first responders.

🎧 Follow the dispatcher's instructions.
Emergency dispatchers are trained to guide you until help arrives. They may provide lifesaving instructions or ask questions that help responding crews prepare before they reach you, so it is important to listen, and follow their instructions if possible.

Preparing today can make a big difference tomorrow. Taking a few minutes now to organize important information could save valuable time when it matters most.

At Meramec Ambulance District, we're committed to providing the highest level of emergency medical care when you need us most. Stay prepared, stay safe, and remember—if you're experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 immediately.

MYTH: You should suck the venom out of a snake bite.

FACT: Trying to suck out venom can cause more harm and is not an effective way to treat a snake bite.

If you are bitten:
✔️ Stay calm
✔️ Keep the affected area still
✔️ Remove any tight items before swelling begins
✔️ Seek medical attention right away

Knowing what not to do can be just as important as knowing what to do. 🚑

The members of the Meramec Ambulance District extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and members of Boles Fire Protection District following the passing of former Chief, Gene Harfst.

Chief Harfst dedicated many years of his life to serving his community. His leadership, commitment, and dedication to public service left a lasting impact on those he served and the first responders who had the privilege of working alongside him.

The bonds of public service extend far beyond district boundaries, and the loss of a dedicated leader is felt throughout the entire first responder community. We stand alongside our brothers and sisters at Boles Fire Protection District as they mourn his passing and honor his legacy of service.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and fellow first responders during this difficult time.

Rest easy, Chief. Thank you for your dedicated service.

Our social media person is off today, so the crew of 8537 volunteered to take over today’s scheduled post.

They even made their own graphic. 🚑🎨

While we admire their confidence, we’ll make sure they stick to EMS.

P.S. Our social media person will be back soon. Until then, let’s all agree this never happened.

Our crews at Station 1 had a special guest hanging out with them yesterday! Meet Koda, an extremely handsome 2-year-old Great Pyrenees who is currently looking for his forever home. 💙🐶

Koda previously spent most of his time outdoors with the important job of guarding chickens, but he’s decided the working life might not be for him. He’d much rather be inside, spending time with his people and enjoying all the comforts that come with being a beloved house pet!

While they were still getting to know Koda, one thing is already clear: he has a sweet disposition and absolutely loves being around people. Our crews certainly enjoyed having him around Station 1!

We should also mention that Koda has a little experience in the art of escape. Apparently, if there’s a way out, Koda considers it less of a barrier and more of a personal challenge. 😂🐾 That’s why a secure fence is especially important for this adventurous guy!

If you think Koda could be the newest member of your family, you can apply to meet him at dirksfund.com.

🏡 Applicants must have a securely fenced yard at least 4 feet high. All applicants will be screened, including a home check.

Please help us spread the word and find this handsome guy the loving, securely fenced forever home he deserves! 💙🐾
