👉Sermon: The Authority to Forgive Sins
---
Isaiah 43 : 25 (RSV)
"I, I am He who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins."
---
Mark 2 : 6 - 7 (RSV)
Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, "Why does this man speak thus? It is blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone?"
---
And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. It is interesting to contrast last weeks scene on the public stage with this weeks scene in a very personal space, perhaps Simon Peter’s house. Let's assume that it was a modest home but over-crowded with people. When four men carrying a paralytic looking for a healing had to find their own way into the home, they were literally digging through the clay, thatch, and wooden beams of the living room roof! This clash with the scribes is all the more intense—knowing that they had squeezed into a crowded home to scrutinize Jesus in his own neighborhood.
Make no mistake, these were respected religious officials. Mark notes that the scribes were "sitting there". How was it that in such a crowded home there was room for sitting? In 1st-century Jewish culture, sitting was the posture of authoritative teaching and judicial evaluation (much like a judge sitting on a bench). The religious legal experts had taken prime seating to evaluate and challenge Jesus.
Mark's account serves as the first explicit confrontation where Jesus publicly ties visible physical healing to invisible spiritual authority. Up until this moment, Jesus has been curing diseases and casting out demons—actions that prophets like Elijah or Elisha also performed. But when he says to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven," he steps across a distinct line. When the scribes accuse him of blasphemy, Jesus uses the physical miracle as a diagnostic proof. There is so much wrapped up in this cramped space, but think about this scene from the belief that afflictions were the result of punishment for sins.
Jesus performs the visible, verifiable miracle (the physical) so that the onlookers have no choice but to reckon with the unseeable reality (the spiritual release of sin). The physical healing is the tangible signpost pointing to the greater grace. As Christians, we understand Jesus’ ministry is ultimately about whole-person restoration, with the healing of the soul as the true priority.
Jesus didn't just heal a paralytic; He established himself as the one who blots out our transgressions. Which do you need more from Him today: a change in your situation, or the peace of a forgiven soul?

Reminds me of the old churches off the beaten path where folks raised their families and now the people are looking for that wisdom and experience again.
