Is your child ready for the new school year?

One of the most important back-to-school checklist items is making sure your child's immunizations are up to date. Virginia requires certain vaccines for school entry to help protect students, families, and our community from vaccine-preventable diseases.

➡️ Swipe through to see:
🎒 Required immunizations for Kindergarten
🏫 Required immunizations for Middle & High School students

Every child is different, and vaccine recommendations may vary based on age, medical history, or previous immunizations. If you're unsure whether your child is due for any vaccines, we're here to help.

Scheduling your child's well visit before school starts is a great opportunity to:
✔️ Review immunization records
✔️ Receive any recommended vaccines
✔️ Complete school health forms
✔️ Ask questions about your child's health

Let's work together to help your child start the school year healthy, protected, and ready to learn!

📞 Call Advanced Pediatrics at 703-938-5555 to schedule your child's well visit or discuss any questions about school immunization requirements.

📚🍎 Back-to-School Sleep Reset Starts Now! 😴

The first day of school will be here before we know it! While new backpacks and school supplies are important, a healthy sleep routine is one of the best ways to set your child up for success.

In this post, you'll find:
🚌 Fairfax County Public Schools' start date (Aug 24th) and school start times
😴 Recommended hours of sleep by age
🧠 How quality sleep supports learning, mood, attention, and overall health
⏰ Simple steps to help your family adjust before school begins

Don't wait until the night before school starts!

Start shifting your child's schedule 10–15 minutes earlier each day by:
✔️ Moving bedtime earlier
✔️ Waking up a little earlier each morning
✔️ Keeping wake-up times consistent—even on weekends when possible

Giving your child about a week (or more) to adjust helps their internal clock reset naturally, making those first few school mornings much easier.

A few more healthy sleep habits:
🌅 Get outside in the morning sunlight.
📱 Turn off screens at least an hour before bedtime.
📖 Create a relaxing bedtime routine with reading, quiet music, or conversation.
🛏️ Keep bedrooms cool, dark, and quiet.

A well-rested child is more likely to:
💙 Pay attention in class
📚 Learn and retain new information
😊 Manage emotions and stress
⚽ Have energy for sports and after-school activities

Let's help make this school year a great one—starting with a good night's sleep!

As teens become more independent, ongoing conversations are one of the best ways to help keep them safe.

The American Academy of Pediatrics encourages parents to stay connected by having regular, judgment-free conversations about everyday situations teens may face.

Topics worth discussing include:
📱 Digital safety and responsible social media use
🚗 Safe driving habits and avoiding distractions
👥 Peer pressure and making healthy choices
📍 Letting someone know where they'll be
☎️ Knowing when—and how—to ask for help

One of the most important messages you can share is this:

"No matter what happens, you can always call me."

Knowing they have a trusted adult they can turn to builds confidence, strengthens communication, and helps teens make safer decisions.

At Advanced Pediatrics, we're here to support parents and teens as they navigate the exciting—and sometimes challenging—years of growing independence.

Sunburn Care Basics ☀️

What to do if your child gets too much sun

Even with the best planning, sunburns can happen. Here's how to help your child recover and stay comfortable:

🌡️ Cool the skin
Take a cool (not cold) bath or apply cool, damp compresses to the affected areas.

💧 Hydrate
Sunburn can lead to dehydration. Encourage your child to drink plenty of water or other fluids.

🧴 Moisturize
After bathing, gently apply a fragrance-free moisturizer or aloe vera gel to help soothe the skin.

👕 Protect the burn
Keep sunburned skin covered with lightweight clothing and avoid additional sun exposure until it has healed.

🚫 Don't pop blisters
Blisters help protect the skin while it heals. If they break on their own, gently clean the area with soap and water and keep it covered.

⚠️ Know when to call your pediatrician
Contact your child's healthcare provider if they have:
• A severe sunburn with extensive blistering
• Fever, chills, or vomiting
• Signs of dehydration (dry mouth, dizziness, decreased urination)
• Severe pain or swelling
• Sunburn in an infant under 1 year of age

The best treatment is prevention! Remember to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher), wear protective clothing and hats, seek shade during peak sun hours, and reapply sunscreen every 2 hours—or after swimming or sweating.

Teaching body safety starts with open, age-appropriate conversations.

Body safety isn't about making children afraid—it's about helping them feel confident, respected, and empowered.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends teaching children:
💙 The correct names for all body parts
💙 That their body belongs to them
💙 They can say "no" to unwanted touch
💙 The difference between safe surprises and unsafe secrets
💙 Who their trusted adults are if they ever need help

These conversations don't have to happen all at once. Small, ongoing discussions throughout childhood help children build confidence and know they can always come to you with questions or concerns.

At Advanced Pediatrics, we're here to partner with parents in raising healthy, confident, and safe children.

Common Summer Illnesses in NOVA Kids☀️👧🧒

Summer means more outdoor fun—but also more chances for your child to catch seasonal bugs 🐞 and rashes 🌿. Here are 8 common summer illnesses we see at Advanced Pediatrics:

🦠 1. Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD)
Painful sores + rash on hands/feet? Likely HFMD, especially in kids under 5.
🧼 Prevention: Frequent handwashing, sanitize shared
toys.

🐜 2. Lyme Disease
Ticks love Virginia’s wooded trails! Watch for the bull’s-eye rash.
🧴 Prevention: Insect repellent + tick checks after outdoor play.

🏖️ 3. Swimmer’s Ear (Otitis Externa)
Caused by trapped water in the ear canal after swimming.
🧽 Prevention: Dry ears well, avoid inserting objects into the ear.

🌡️ 4. Heat-Related Illnesses
Too much sun can lead to exhaustion or heat stroke.
💧 Prevention: Hydrate, take breaks, and wear light clothing.

🍗 5. Foodborne Illness (Food Poisoning)
Warm temps = faster bacterial growth at BBQs & picnics.
🤢 Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.
🧊 Prevention: Keep food chilled, wash hands before eating.

🌿 6. Poison Ivy & Oak Reactions
“Leaves of three, let it be!” Oils cause itchy, blistering rashes.
🧼 Prevention: Avoid contact, wash skin & clothes after hiking.

🦟 7. Insect Bites & Stings
Bees 🐝 and mosquitoes 🦟 can cause swelling—or worse, allergic reactions.
🛡️ Prevention: Bug spray + cover exposed skin.

🤢 8. Stomach Viruses
Norovirus spreads fast at camps and crowded events.
🧴 Prevention: Hand hygiene is key—especially before meals!

✅ Pro Tips from Our Pediatricians
☀️ Apply SPF 30+ every 2 hours
🥤 Hydrate often (not just during play)
🧢 Wear hats + protective clothing outdoors
🔍 Do tick checks every evening

🪖🚲 A Helmet Is the Most Important Piece of Safety Gear Your Child Can Wear.

Whether your child is riding a bike, e-bike, scooter, e-scooter, hoverboard, skateboard, or other wheeled device, a properly fitted helmet can help protect against serious head and brain injuries.

As more children and teens enjoy motorized scooters and e-bikes, it's especially important to remember that higher speeds can mean a greater risk of injury. A helmet should be worn every ride, every time—even for short trips around the neighborhood.

Here are a few ways to encourage helmet use:
✅ Start the habit early.
✅ Let your child choose a helmet they like.
✅ Be a role model—wear your helmet, too!
✅ Make helmet use a non-negotiable rule before riding.

A few minutes spent putting on a helmet can make a lifetime of difference.

At Advanced Pediatrics, we're committed to helping families enjoy active, healthy, and safe summers.
