Today is World Bee Day.
On this day Anton Janša, the pioneer of beekeeping, was born in 1734. The purpose of the international day is to acknowledge the role of bees and other pollinators for the ecosystem.

Here’s to Anton, and to all our precious pollinators…

Feb 25- March 1
Madagascar - Days 11 - 16
Mananjary - Antsirabe - Antananarivo

My days training the AINA Cooperative in Antsenavolo on varroa mite control using oxalic acid v***r were an experience I shall never forget. I have learned so much more than I could ever have taught... I am so grateful for all that I have in life. I am truly rich.

I visited as many apiaries as I could, walking almost 125 KM (cumulative) with my hosts to visit them - through rain, forests, farms, rivers, and hilltops. They fed me, picked me up when I fell, and made me feel like a member of their family.

I had one afternoon after the job was done to see the beach (Indian Ocean), eat seafood, and see the wildlife. My trip has come to an end, and while I will miss Madagascar, I can’t wait to hold my beautiful wife and children. Thank you, Madagascar! Thank you to Cultivating New Frontiers in Agriculture (CNFA.org) and to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for giving me the opportunity to contribute to the Farmer2Farmer program.

Feb 21 - 24
Madagascar - Days 7-10
Ranomafana - Anstenavolo - Mananjary

Five days of intensive training with the TAM Cooperative in Ranomafana came to conclusion on Feb. 22, complete with a blessing from the Mayor of Ranomafana. The highlights of the first part of my trip include amazing camaraderie between Beekeepers of different cultures, a transfer of knowledge and tools to combat varroa mites, catching a wild colony in a cliff top cave, and a tour of the rainforest upon completion of training. I was gifted the greatest gift a beekeeper can ever receive...honey from another beekeeper. Lychee blossom honey to be exact. How is it in life that those with nothing to give always give the most? I had to hold back tears...

Feb. 23 was travel day again. Ranomafana to Mananjary with a stop in Antsenavolo to meet the the next cooperative I will be working with - AINA Cooperative. I will be staying in Mananjary on the coast, but commuting 1.5hrs each way to work with AINA. They are in quite a remote part of Southeastern Madagascar. This cooperative is much more advanced than the previous, producing over 3500 liters of honey annually. We began their training today with topics that include varroa control, splits, and queen rearing. Here are some pics of my last days in Ranomafana, catching a wild colony, the rainforest and wildlife, and The members of AINA breaking bread with me.

Feb 17 - 20
Madagascar - Days 4 - 6
Ranomafana

We are three and a half days into effective varroa mite control training. I have focused on using oxalic acid v***r as the most sustainable option moving forward for this cooperative. The cost of medications is too prohibitive for folks that subsistence live. Despite it’s infinite beauty, an overwhelming majority of Malagasy people live on less than $1 a day...Therefore, traditional meds that cost $6/7 per colony are not a sustainable solution in this context. With exception of the 2 v***rizers, which are a gift from an NGO, everything else required is locally sourced and affordable. I have tried to spend as little time in a classroom as possible and more time demonstrating live applications in various apiaries. Every day gives us new challenges and opportunities when we’re opening boxes rather than talking theory. Today, we came upon a wild colony on the outskirts of the rainforest, up a steep slope and nestled in a rock cave. One of the most challenging transplants I’ve been a part of, as there was no good footing to be had, and a steep 30ft to the bottom. Patience, teamwork, and a human chain in the end won the day! I am unable to take pictures while I’m suited and working, but I hope to share more “action” pictures once they are sent to me. For now, here are pictures of this beautiful country, hives being treated for varroa with oxalic acid v***r, and the wild colony inside the cave. More soon. Hive Hive!

Feb 14 - 16
Madagascar - Days 1-3
Antananarivo and Ranomafana

Wow. What a journey to get to this magical place! IAD to Paris, followed by Paris to Antananarivo (11hrs, ugh!). After passing a quick coronavirus screen, I exited customs around midnight in Madagascar and was greeted by program staff who took me to my hotel. Briefed on our objectives and country protocols, we departed Antananarivo on Sunday for the 12hr ride to Ranomafana, where the first of two cooperatives we will be working with is located.

This country is breathtaking. Situated equatorially in the Southern Hemisphere, it does not have a winter like we are used to in the US, but rather a rainy season that is still temperate. The color green is everywhere as agriculture and rainforest dominate the landscape. There are thousands upon thousands of species of plants and animals that exist only on this island! Beekeepers here harvest honey up to 4 times a year since there is always a food source year round. Neat. Rice is a staple diet of Malagasy people, and rice paddies shape the countryside landscape as most farmers are still small holders, growing for themselves, and selling or trading other fruit/vegetables for what they don’t grow. Ranomafana is located just outside the rainforest in the southeast part of the island, where lemurs and over 1000 species of orchids can be found! Haven’t seen them yet, but here are some pictures of our trek here. Enjoy and stay tuned...

We at Hive Hive are very proud and honored to have been tapped by USAID’s Farmer2Farmer program in Madagascar to train local beekeeping cooperatives on effective and sustainable varroa mite control! Steven will be in Madagascar from Feb 14 - March 3 as a volunteer working in the Ranomafana and Antsenavolo regions, where he will no doubt learn as much as he will teach.

You can follow his adventures in Madagascar right here as he has promised to document it for our benefit.

We caught them this morning. The first video shows how we got the majority of them into the new box, and the second video shows the bees expressing their Nasonov glands to let the others know where to go.
