Read the story of families of Syrian refugees and their journey, through hardships and war, to Vashon Island.

Here’s a sneak peak:
“We were one of the last Syrian families to come through,” Alati said. “Two days after we came, the travel ban was put into place.”

Anonymous reports becoming a problem at VHS? 🚨

Here’s a sneak peak into an upcoming article on the topic: “When students cry wolf so often, it lessens the credibility of the anonymous reports and thus depletes the school’s trust in student knowledge.” Read more about the events leading up to this in our upcoming issue of the Riptide! Coming out this Tuesday, Nov 14.

As a senior, this is Brennan Barrett's first year on the Riptide staff. He works in Broadcast as director of photography.

“This semester I’ve been working mostly with cameras and filming stuff for the broadcast team,” Barrett said.

He also held an important position his first semester as online editor, making sure that our website was always up to date. Barrett enjoys being part of the broadcast team as it allows him to work with cameras and technology, rather than in print.

Outside of Riptide, one of Barrett’s main interests is music. His band, Twice Nice, takes up a lot of his time, rehearsing and playing concerts on Vashon and in Seattle.

After graduation, Barrett plans on going to college. While he is still deciding where to go, Western seems most likely. He is interested in continuing his passion by studying music, as well as English and literature.

Maddy Dumais was on the Riptide staff for one semester her freshman year, but decided to join us again her senior year as social media and distribution editor.

As social media editor, Dumais is in charge of updating our Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat with posts about upcoming school events, the paper and more.

“I also distribute the paper all over town,” Dumais said.

Her position is crucial to getting word out about what we are doing here in Riptide. She also spends a lot of late nights at labs working to design the paper. As for her writing, she enjoys writing Arts and Entertainment articles or stories in which she can include her opinion.

Outside of Riptide, Dumais loves sports. She played volleyball for three years of high school and has played soccer since she was seven on a rec team in Seattle.

“It’s one of my favorite sports. I absolutely love my team. They’re like my sisters,” Dumais said.

As a senior, Dumais already has a strong plan for what she wants to do after graduation.

“Next year I’m going to WSU to major in Interior Design with a double minor in Business and Construction Management,” Dumais said.

Aria Garrett joined us second semester this year as our copy editor. Reading through each story, she primarily looks for grammar and style errors.

“It’s often difficult because it’s not just ‘stereotypical’ grammar errors I’m catching — it’s also errors according to the AP Stylebook, which is really specific,” Garrett said.

As for her own writing, she tends to lean towards Op-Eds specifically focused on social justice or politics.

She thrives in these areas outside of Riptide too. For instance, she was the varsity policy debate captain and is currently the Legislative Affairs Director for the Legislative Youth Advisory Council.

“It’s a state agency that advises our legislature on youth-related issues. For example, I wrote a bill mandating comprehensive sexual health education in high schools and got a legislative sponsor. We also lobby for bills, meet with legislators and give civic education presentations,” Garrett said.

As a senior, her plans for after graduation are coming together.

“I’m probably going to either Bryn Mawr College or Wesleyan University in Connecticut,” Garrett said.

Depending on where she goes, she plans to get a degree either in neuroscience or political science.
