in Clark County History: June 1, 1942 — When Vancouver’s shipyards boomed, the hospital plans got big fast on a wartime timetable

84-years ago, The Columbian reported that construction was underway on a modern 70-bed hospital to be built by the Portland Permanente Corporation, a Kaiser organization, near the Kaiser shipyard. And because wartime Vancouver was doing everything all at once, the announcement came alongside news of another 2,000-man dormitory project approved for the city.

The hospital was expected to cost $221,000 to build (about $4,515,179.14 in 2026 value), not including furnishings and equipment, and officials said it would be finished in a flat 65 days. Located just north of the new dorms, it was designed primarily to serve shipyard workers and their families, while also helping relieve crowded hospital conditions in Vancouver.

And this was to be no tiny first-aid shack. The Columbian described plans for a medical center about three times the size of the average hospital, complete with six surgeries, a spacious kitchen, several dining rooms, and a first-aid unit almost as large as the hospital proper. Its first completed section, with 24 rooms and two surgeries, was intended for the exclusive use of shipyard workers.
