๐ŸŽ‰ Join us at the Juneteenth Freedom Celebration! ๐ŸŽ‰

Community in Motion is honored to once again participate in Vancouver's Juneteenth Freedom Celebration at Esther Short Park.

President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, but freedom did not immediately reach everyone it promised to free. In Confederate-held territories, slavery continued as the Civil War raged on. It was not until June 19, 1865, more than two years later, that Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce and enforce emancipation in the last Confederate state where slavery remained largely unchecked. While Texas was not the final state in the nation to end slavery, this moment became a powerful symbol of freedom delayed and freedom realized.

The following year, newly freed Black Texans organized the first annual observance of the occasion, often called "Jubilee Day," laying the foundation for what we now celebrate as Juneteenth.

By reflecting on this history and the enduring legacy of slavery, we deepen our understanding of our nation's past and present while strengthening our commitment to a more just and equitable future.

Juneteenth is also a fun and vibrant celebration of Black history, culture, resilience, achievements, and the many ways Black Americans have shaped and strengthened our communities and country.

Join us for a day of live entertainment, local vendors, cultural experiences, family activities, and opportunities to connect with neighbors and community organizations.

We had such a great time at the very first Silver Trails outing at Orchards Community Park! ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ

It was a beautiful day filled with fresh air, towering Douglas-fir, great conversation, and community connection. One of the highlights was discovering the hidden RC car racetrack tucked into the woods, built by local community members!

Weโ€™re grateful to partner with Parks Foundation and Vancouver Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services to help create opportunities for older adults to get outside, stay active, explore local parks, and connect with others in the community.

Weโ€™re already looking forward to next monthโ€™s walk along the Renaissance Trail! ๐ŸŒณ

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the first Silver Trails outing such a success.

๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿšฒ๐ŸŒฑ Community feedback helps create safer, stronger, and more connected transportation systems for everyone.

At the recent 192nd Avenue Project open house, community members shared valuable input on how people travel the corridor, roundabout central island design, and preferences for walking, biking, rolling, and crossing improvements along the corridor.

If you missed the open house, thereโ€™s still time to participate! The online comment card is open through May 31, and feedback will go directly to the project team to help shape the final design ahead of the final open house in fall 2026.

We encourage community members to share their thoughts and help shape the future of this important corridor: beheardvancouver.org/192nd
