Singing well is science paired with athleticism.
(Insert confused expression here)
Many great people genuinely believe singing is just something you do. And when told that there is a lot of science involved, I am often met with honest confusion. So here's just a small list of ways singing requires scientific understanding and athletic training:
Athletic demands:
Muscular accuracy, endurance, respiratory and core strength, control of intercostal muscles, vocal agility, precision, and coordination requiring regular training, warm ups, cool downs, and proper technique to prevent injury (especially when singing vocally demanding music)
Acoustic science: pitch frequencies, formant, resonance, vowel frequencies and modifications.
Biological science: 100+ muscles including core, intercostal, and pelvic floor muscles, subglottal pressure, complex laryngeal functions, threshold pressures, supraglottal pressure and so much more.
This is a quick glance at just a few of the many physiological and scientific demands required to sing well. Sure....there's a lot to unwrap here... but a good teacher will guide you through exercises and present information in a way you can understand so that you can smoothly and gradually develop your vocal athleticism.

It has been a privilege and absolute joy working with retired Mariner's pitcher, Jamie Moyer.
Jamie, not a lesson went by where you didn't have me laughing from all of your shenanigans. So many great memories were made as we explored music and learned the art of singing. I always knew when you had arrived for lessons because I could hear you singing! During this time, you have taught me so much both as a teacher and as a friend. Your hard work, in preparing to sing for your daughter's wedding, is an inspiration. I wish you both the best and look forward to many more wonderful lessons.

Nobody begins as an expert.
The first attempt is usually awkward, slow, embarrassing, and imperfect.
Your first video.
Your first business.
Your first public speech.
Your first design.
Your first investment.
Your first gym session.
Most people quit at the “ugly shape” stage because they mistake imperfection for failure.
But mastery is not magic.
It is repetition.
The people you admire today were once beginners nobody noticed.
The däñerøus mindset is wanting perfect results from early attempts.
That expectation k!||s more dreams than lack of talent ever will.
Consistency quietly fixes what talent alone cannot.

So many people are surprised at how technical the voice is! During lessons we discuss topics such as air pressure above and below the vocal folds, positioning of the larynx, vowel formation, the 100+ muscles involved in singing, and so much more! It's 💯 a learned skill that can be trained. However, so many of us don't know how our voice even functions. Voice lessons have given singers a great deal of understanding and with it improved skills, self confidence, and opportunities.

Your voice holds power far beyond words.
According to a fascinating study, singing for just one hour can increase your body’s production of secretory immunoglobulin A, or SIgA, by up to 240 percent. SIgA is your immune system’s first line of defense. It coats the lining of your mouth, throat, lungs, and digestive system, blocking viruses and bacteria before they invade deeper.
Researchers compared people who sang to those who simply listened to music or sat quietly. The difference was clear. Singing led to a massive spike in immunity, while the other activities offered only minor changes.
The act of singing is not just emotional. It is physical medicine. Breath control strengthens the lungs. Muscle engagement improves circulation. Vocal vibration stimulates healing in the chest, face, and brain.
Even more impressive? Singing activates the vagus nerve. This nerve calms the body, regulates stress, lowers cortisol, and balances your immune system. It is the body’s natural switch between fight mode and healing mode.
This is not about singing well. It is about singing fully. Whether it is gospel in a choir, humming in the kitchen, or belting a pop song in the car, your immune system listens and responds.
Singing also boosts endorphins, creating a natural high that relaxes the mind and energizes the body. In a world overwhelmed by stress, that shift can be the medicine many people never realized they needed.
So sing like your health depends on it. Because science says it just might.
Your voice is more than expression. It is immunity in motion.
