This Persian pure silk Qum rug (3’2”x4’9”) depicts the famous “Last Supper,” the final meal shared by Jesus Christ and his twelve apostles before his crucifixion. The scene comes from the Christian New Testament and is especially known through Leonardo da Vinci’s celebrated mural. During the supper, Jesus announces that one of his disciples will betray him, creating the dramatic emotions and gestures seen around the table. The bread and wine symbolize the beginning of Holy Communion in Christian tradition. Persian master weavers in Qum beautifully adapted this iconic religious scene into silk carpets, blending European religious imagery with extraordinary Persian weaving artistry and craftsmanship. There’s a hand sewn pocket on the back top for easy hanging of this rug using a simple rod.
Last week at Los Angeles County Museum of Art, I saw these remarkable Egyptian mummy masks from the 4th century CE, roughly 1600 to 1700 years ago. Made of plaster and pigments during the Roman period in Egypt, it beautifully reflects the fusion of ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman artistic traditions. The large expressive eyes, colorful geometric patterns, and symbolic figures were designed to protect and honor the deceased in the afterlife. What fascinated me most was how closely the composition resembles great textile and carpet design traditions — balanced symmetry, decorative borders, repeating motifs, and rich color harmony. Even nearly 1,700 years later, the craftsmanship, artistic sophistication, and timeless visual language still feel surprisingly modern and deeply connected to the world of decorative arts and fine rugs.
