Shade may be one of the simplest amenities on a property.
It's also one of the most valued.
Want to know if a landscape is working?
Watch where people choose to sit.
Every day, people vote with their feet.
They choose the shaded path over the sunny one.
They gather beneath mature trees.
They linger where it's comfortable and move quickly through places that aren't.
For all the technology, planning, and design that goes into a landscape, people tend to tell us exactly what works.
We just have to pay attention!

"Third space" may be a trending term today, but the idea itself is not new.
In a world where people can be productive from almost anywhere, what makes a commercial office worth the drive?
It's rarely another conference room.
It's the spaces that allow people to connect, recharge, think, collaborate, or simply step away from a screen for a few minutes.
Amenities help attract attention, but meaningful outdoor environments help create a sense of place. They shape how people experience a property and, ultimately, whether they want to spend time there.
For decades, research has shown that people respond positively to nature. Water, shade, planting, texture, and quiet spaces can influence how comfortable, focused, and connected people feel within the built environment.
That's why landscapes are increasingly being designed not just as something to look at, but as something to experience.
Perhaps the future of commercial properties isn't about offering more space. It's about creating better spaces.
What makes an outdoor environment somewhere you'd actually choose to spend time?

This World Environment Day, we’re reminded that landscapes are part of something much bigger than aesthetics.
A healthy landscape doesn’t just look good, it supports the environment around it!
From pollinators and wildlife to soil health and water management, every landscape plays a role in the ecosystems people interact with every day.
Creating a landscape is one step. Maintaining it thoughtfully over time is what allows it to truly thrive.
The most meaningful landscapes are the ones that feel connected to their environment, support their region naturally, and create healthier spaces for both people and nature.

This time of the year is the most crucial in the terrains of the wild west. Our teams across Arizona and Nevada have year over year embraced the scorching heat of the desert.
This region is not forgiving and presents a challenge when trying to create a functional space to live, work, and play. However, the best thing to do is to work with nature rather than against it. Landscaping in these regions requires a completely different way of thinking than much of the West.
The intense heat, alkaline soils, water limitations, rapid temperature swings, and extreme sun exposure demand resilience, and not just visual appeal.
Plant selection changes. Irrigation strategies change. Material choices change. Even how shade is created and how outdoor spaces are experienced, shifts in desert environments.
In regions like this, landscapes have to work harder. They need to conserve resources, handle stress, and still create spaces people want to spend time in.
That takes observation, adaptability, and teams who understand how to work with the desert instead of against it.
The desert has its own rhythm, and designing for it well is both a challenge and a craft. If you’re struggling to make your property adaptable to the desert climate, contact us. www.gothiclandscape.com

Most conversations around sustainability focus on technology, and while it’s essential, one of the most powerful tools is something we already have access to…Natural light!
The way a property is positioned, shaded, and exposed can reduce energy use, improve comfort, and create opportunities for solar and passive energy systems to work more effectively.
Things like tree placement, airflow, and sun exposure often shape how a space performs, sometimes more than the materials themselves.
That’s why we approach landscapes as part of a larger environmental system, not just an aesthetic feature. Every site is an opportunity to improve performance, efficiency, and the way people experience a space.
Good design isn’t just about how a property looks. It’s about how intelligently it works with its environment.

Our environment is facing very real pressures. Flooding, polluted runoff, heat buildup, and habitat loss are becoming harder to ignore across both urban and commercial spaces.
That’s why features like bioswales, permeable surfaces, and stormwater capture systems are no longer just design upgrades. They’re becoming essential infrastructure.
When landscapes are designed to slow, absorb, and filter water naturally, properties perform better over time. Less runoff. Better water management. More resilient ecosystems.
Good landscapes shouldn’t just look sustainable. They should actively support the environment around them and solve problems at the ground level.

Corporate landscapes are moving away from sterile concrete walkways and toward intentionally designed courtyards that people actually want to use.
Let's look at this landscape of a corporate plaza, where
- Natural textures guide movement more organically
- Layered planting adds shade, depth, and sensory experience
- Resilient ecosystems designs are in place to mature and perform over time
This goes beyond “planting trees.” It’s about creating outdoor environments that support people, adapt to climate conditions, and strengthen the long-term value of a property.
What’s the most impactful outdoor amenity you’ve seen in a commercial project recently?

The biggest gains on a property often start outside the building.
On many commercial sites, the signs are easy to miss at first...
Pavement holding heat well into the afternoon.
Walkways with no shade.
Outdoor spaces that look usable on paper but sit empty during peak hours because they are simply too hot to occupy comfortably.
This is Urban Heat island effect. Over time, those details begin shaping how a property feels and how people move through it.
Strategic landscaping has the ability to change that. Tree canopy, shade planning, plant material selection, and cooler ground surfaces can reduce heat buildup and make outdoor environments more usable throughout the day.
In high-traffic commercial spaces, comfort influences more than appearance. It impacts experience, movement, perception, and how people interact with the property as a whole. Is your property meeting the comfort scale?
