My client and good friend 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐬 is an angel of a human.
He once decided—casually—to run across the entire country.
As in: coast to coast.
One man. One pair of sneakers. 👟

What started as an almost impossible physical feat turned into a spiritual one.
During our coaching, we worked on his ability to say NO.

No to sugar, no to parties, no to distractions—so he could say a full-bodied F*CK YES to the book about his experience that wanted to pour out of him.

And pour it did.

When he handed me his first draft, I thought, 😬 “Oh God, what if my client can’t write? Do I fake it?”
Then I opened it and—holy smokes—the man could WRITE.

Not only had he seen, heard, and smelled more of America than most presidents!
But he could translate it into prose that makes you feel like you’re right there beside him—sweaty, blistered, and somehow more alive. 🔥🏃🏻💨

And speaking of smell…
Chris is also the best-smelling man in every room he walks into.

This was my 10th Burn. 🔥
My first with my love, Nick. ❤️
My first flying in. ✈️

We danced through thunderstorms. Attended a wedding. Cried at the funeral procession for goddess of the Playa led by her beloved . Got chills at ’s poetry reading. Welcomed the sunrise at Arise built by & . Danced on as my friends & performed live. Ate steak at Golden Guy Alley and sang our asses off at Black Rock Piano Lounge with .

The Playa gave Nick and I magic. ✨

❤️‍🩹 But it also gave us a reminder of life’s fragility. ❤️‍🩹

My brother flew in to the Playa before me with two friends. One—the pilot whom he’s known for years. Playful, fun guy and experienced test pilot for the military. The other passenger was another friend—really easygoing man whom my brother had just enjoyed adventures with in Europe.

When my ride to BM fell through, my brother’s friend the pilot offered to leave the Burn in his ✈️, pick me up in Reno, and fly me back. I didn’t take the flight, but his generosity stayed with me.

My brother ended up leaving the Burn early. His two friends stayed till the end and flew out hours before the Temple burned.

THEIR PLANE CRASHED.
The passenger didn’t survive.
The pilot is in critical condition.

We’re devastated. That could have been my brother. That could have been Nick and I.

When these two Burners hopped on that plane, their hearts were probably full of ❤️ and aliveness. It shakes me to my core to think of how the joyful pictures we take at one Burn… can become the offerings left by our grieving friends at the next.

This was one of my best burns ever… and one of my most sobering.

I hold the magic ✨, and I hold the grief ❤️‍🩹. Both belong.

I have never felt more connected to this city.

For all our crystal-loving, gluten-fearing, tech-bro-shaman tropes, the way Angelenos are coming together to give the literal clothes off their backs to displaced people is nothing short of EXTRAORDINARY.

So many of us have sprung into action to help our neighbors, just as we did before when Asheville, Appalachia and Tampa needed us last year.

Angelenos, from this rubble we will rebuild stronger.
