🦾🙌 Our vinyl lamination setup is dialed in for the way we produce signs, graphics, wraps, and large-format projects.

The goal? Perfect alignment, consistent pressure, minimal waste, and a clean finished graphic every time.

We print the vinyl, allow the ink to properly dry/cure, then laminate it using our large-format laminator with the right pressure and tension for the material. From there, it’s ready for trimming, contour cutting, application, or installation.

Having the printer, laminator, plotter, production tables, and finishing area positioned together makes a huge difference in production flow. Less unnecessary handling = fewer opportunities for dust, scratches, wrinkles, misalignment, or damaged graphics.

And yes… having the right equipment matters. But how you set it up and actually use it matters just as much. 😮‍💨

We used our Thunder Laser to etch 90+ plaques with consistent positioning and repeatable results. ⚡

The custom production jigs were just as important. The jigs hold every plaque in the exact same position, helping us maintain consistency throughout the entire batch. 🛠️📐

Small channel letter. Big attention to detail. 👀

This one is only 6 inches tall, which means there’s very little room for error when installing the trim cap.

For small fabricated channel letters, clean trim cap installation is all about precision. The cap has to follow the shape of the letter, maintain a consistent edge, and finish cleanly around tight corners and detailed sections. At this scale, even a small imperfection becomes obvious.

This is the part of channel letter fabrication that doesn’t always make it into the final reveal — but it’s what separates a clean, professional sign from one that just looks “good enough.”

DIRECT PRINT vs. LAMINATED VINYL — which one are you choosing? 👀

This double-sided A-frame sign is a perfect example of why there isn’t always one “right” production method.

For this project, we printed the graphics on vinyl, laminated them, trimmed everything, and applied the finished graphics to both sides of the A-frame.

And yes, before you ask. We could have direct printed it. But watch until the end to see why we didn’t.

🖨️ DIRECT PRINT — PROS

• Prints directly onto the substrate
• No separate vinyl application step
• Great for rigid substrates and flat panels
• Can be very efficient for certain production runs
• Fewer application steps during production

🖨️ DIRECT PRINT — CONS

• The finished surface can be more exposed to scratches, abrasion, chemicals and handling
• The durability & color vibrancy depends heavily on the ink technology, substrate and environment
• Repairs or graphic changes can be less convenient
• Replacing one damaged graphic generally means reproducing the print
• Some applications benefit from an additional protective coating or laminate

🧻 LAMINATED VINYL — PROS

• The laminate adds a protective layer over the printed graphic
• Excellent option for graphics that will be handled, transported and exposed to the elements
• Easier to replace or update graphics without replacing the entire substrate
• Vinyl can conform to certain surfaces where direct printing isn’t practical
• Great for temporary graphics, event signage, promotional signage and many outdoor applications
• Gives us another layer of protection between the printed image and the real world

🧻 LAMINATED VINYL — CONS

• More labor-intensive
• Requires printing, drying/outgassing when applicable, laminating, trimming and application
• Material cost can be higher because you’re using both vinyl and laminate
• Application requires skill to achieve a clean, bubble-free finish
• More production steps = more opportunities for something to go wrong.

Which is better? Well that depends on you and your situation at your shop.
