The Pacific is becoming more connected, and technologies like satellite broadband are changing what is possible for communities that have historically been difficult to reach.

But availability is only part of the equation.
A connection doesn't create opportunity if the people who could benefit from it can't reasonably afford to use it.

For students, internet access can mean education. For businesses, it can mean reaching customers beyond the islands. For workers, it can open access to remote employment and global careers. For communities, it can improve access to services that geography has traditionally made difficult to deliver.

And as AI and other digital technologies become increasingly important to productivity and competitiveness, reliable connectivity becomes even more important. The World Bank now describes affordable, high-quality internet as essential infrastructure for jobs, education, finance, healthcare and economic growth.

The encouraging part is that affordability can improve. We've already seen significant reductions in connectivity costs in parts of the Pacific as infrastructure improves and competition increases.

The next challenge is making sure those benefits reach beyond governments and larger businesses to families, students, entrepreneurs and communities across our islands.

The goal shouldn't simply be a connected Pacific.

It should be an included Pacific.

The Pacific has made significant progress in becoming more connected.

But the next question is more important: what are we doing with that connection?

Reliable internet should mean more than being able to get online. It should give a student access to education, allow a small business to reach markets outside its island, make essential services easier to access and create new ways for people to participate in the economy.

We're already seeing that transition across the region as Pacific countries develop digital payments, online government services and other digital infrastructure.

The opportunity now is to make sure those systems are practical, accessible and built around the realities of Pacific communities — including people living outside the major urban centres.

Technology has the greatest value when people can actually use it to improve their lives.

Connection is the foundation.
Opportunity is the outcome.

For generations, Pacific people have travelled overseas in search of education, careers and better opportunities. That will continue, and it has created enormous benefits for families and communities across our region.

But there should also be another option.

Someone shouldn't have to leave Samoa, Tonga, Fiji or another Pacific Island simply because the career they want isn't available at home.

Technology is beginning to change what is possible. Remote work, digital services, global connectivity and new technology skills can allow more professional careers to be built from within the Pacific.

That doesn't happen simply because internet access exists. It requires training, reliable infrastructure, strong business standards and companies willing to create genuine pathways for people to develop.

The goal isn't to stop people from leaving.

It's to make staying a real choice.

That's a very different future for the Pacific — and one worth working toward.

For a long time, one of the realities of living in the Pacific was that pursuing certain careers often meant leaving home.

Technology is beginning to change that.

Remote work, cloud platforms, digital services and now AI are making it possible for more work to cross borders without requiring people to do the same.

That creates a much bigger opportunity than simply working from home. It creates the potential to develop skills locally, connect Pacific talent with global businesses, support entrepreneurship, and create meaningful employment within our own communities.

AI will be part of that future too. The opportunity isn't to replace people with technology. It's to teach people how to use technology to become more capable, productive and competitive.

The Pacific already has talent.

The next step is making sure our people have access to the tools, training, systems and opportunities that allow that talent to compete globally.

We don't have to wait for the future of work to arrive.

We can start preparing for it now.

Growth isn't always about doing more.

Sometimes it comes from knowing what not to do.

Every opportunity isn't the right opportunity. Every meeting doesn't need to happen. Every idea doesn't need to become a project.

As businesses grow, saying yes to everything can quickly become a distraction from the things that actually matter.

Knowing when to say no protects your time, your people, and your priorities.

That's not a lack of ambition.

It's knowing where your attention creates the most value.

Growth requires opportunity. Sustainable growth requires selectivity.

Not every decision will be perfect.

But waiting for perfect information often costs more than making a well-informed decision and learning along the way.
