On November 21st, the Chicago Yacht Club Safety Committee hosted a virtual panel discussing three people’s experiences who fell overboard and were separated from their boats, at night, in extreme weather conditions. Jonathan Kabak did a tremendous job of moderating the stories of how these three survived by following key lessons learned in Safety at Sea training. The panelists included Sarah Pederson, COB in the 2020 Hook Race (Racine, WI to Menomonee, WI);Tim Doran, COB during the 2002 Chicago Mac race; and Mark Wheeler, COB in the 2017 Chicago Mac race. They are all forthright about what helped them survive and what they could have done better. C*C has made the link to the video available to all so that more sailors will be aware of what to do if they find themselves overboard.
Take the time to watch this. It is long, but includes potentially life-saving lessons.
