We are sad to announce the passing of Katie, our resident Barn Buddy llama 💔🦙

Katie came to Longmeadow from Southeast Llama Rescue in 2011. During her time with the previous rescue group, Katie had been fostered by a local family. Through them, she was part of a 4-H project where she learned how to walk on a lead, carry a pack, and pick up her hooves. This experience helped make her a perfect candidate to join the Barn Buddies as an animal ambassador, and she greeted hundreds of visitors to the Ranch in her 15 years in our care.

Katie was a friend to many fellow Barn Buddies and particularly enjoyed the company of her camelid companions Teagan and Delores. She made countless TV appearances in her time with us and was an exceptional ambassador for Longmeadow’s mission. Our team will miss her dearly 💗

We would love to see and hear about your memories of our sweet friend Katie in the comments ⬇️

Every year, ADB Companies visits Longmeadow, brings their heavy equipment and tools, and volunteers their time to get tons of much-needed Ranch maintenance care done. From taking down dead trees, to painting fences, to working on our pastures and more, these wonderful people dedicate their time on the weekend to help us give our animals a safe place to call home while they wait for their forever families.

Thank you to the kind people of ADB Companies for supporting our mission and supporting Longmeadow with your generous help!

We

The ADB Community showed up recently in full force as 30 A‑Team members spent the day serving at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch . From cleaning stalls and trimming trees to clearing debris and giving some well‑deserved attention to the animals, our team put in real work with real heart.

Great information from Mid-Rivers Equine Centre - just because your horse isn't dropping grain or losing weight doesn't mean they should skip their annual dental float and oral exam! Routine oral care is preventative and crucial in keeping our equine buddies living healthy and happy lives. 😊🐴🦷

Happy ! Today, we are highlighting Dandy, whose story of rehabilitation and determination are a great example of Longmeadow's mission.

Sweet Dandy came to Longmeadow malnourished and severely underweight. It took her a long time to learn how to trust our groundwork team and staff. She did not have much experience with being handled and dreaded farrier days. After lots of patience and work, however, Dandy started to turn around. During her rehabilitation process and with every pound she gained, she would gain a little but of confidence as well. Although she is still working on her groundwork skills, Dandy is now healthy and continuing to gain that confidence we know is within her.

During her sessions with our trainer, Dandy was kind and inquisitive. She would look towards her handlers for confidence and was a quick learner when focused. Although she has come a long way since her arrival at Longmeadow, Dandy is still new to the world of humans and handling and will require an advanced handler and (hopefully eventually) an advanced rider after professional training.

Dandy’s coat is beautiful and her color shines. She has a sweet face and, with some patience and work, a sweet personality to match. Dandy would do best with an adopter looking for a horse for a lower impact career, as her confirmation wouldn’t make her a star barrel horse or jumper. Dandy has lots of potential and will require someone with the patience and time to work with her and make her the best horse she can be.

On days like today, we want to remind you of how important your donations are. Thanks to you, animals like Dandy are given the care they deserve and a second chance at life.

Does your passion for animals inspire you to roll up your sleeves and work hard? A job at Longmeadow could be the perfect fit for you! We are currently looking to fill multiple positions, including full-time and part-time.

We won’t sugarcoat it: working on a rescue ranch is incredibly rewarding, but it’s also a lot of hard work. While you do get to spend your days around rescued farm animals, the job requires dedication, stamina, and a genuine passion for animal welfare. Much of the day-to-day work involves hands-on care and maintenance, from feeding and watering animals to turning horses out into pastures and cleaning stalls.

But the work doesn’t stop there. Ranch life also means hauling and dumping manure buckets, lifting heavy bales of hay, and tackling a variety of physically demanding tasks that keep the farm running smoothly. Team members must be able to lift 50 pounds (think of a bag of horse grain!) without assistance and be comfortable working outdoors in all kinds of weather. Occasional weekend and holiday shifts are also part of caring for animals who depend on us every day.
As an Equine Care Specialist, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring the health, safety, and comfort of Longmeadow’s many rescued residents. Previous professional horse-handling experience is required.

It’s not easy work, but knowing your efforts directly improve the lives of abused and neglected farm animals makes it all worth it.

Did you catch Teddy and Leonard on this morning? 🤩

These two Barn Buddies—Teddy the miniature horse and Leonard the miniature donkey—stopped by to visit their friend and share what it’s like to be an ambassador for Longmeadow Rescue Ranch 💛

They helped spread the word about our Barn Buddy Program, where you can sponsor one of our amazing rescued farm animals and receive an adorable stuffed version of your buddy— making it the perfect meaningful gift!
