This weekend I may not have brought the crown home, but I came home with lots of memories. Last night I placed first runner up. I am forever grateful for this opportunity, for all of the beautiful girls that stood beside me this weekend, and for the lessons and memories that I will cherish forever.

Whew! It was a busy but FUN day full of rehearsals and ending the night with a PJ party for our Princesses and Princes!!

Tomorrow is PAGEANT DAY and I am SO excited!

Interview is at 8:20 in the morning. Back for rehearsals 12-3, and the Pageant starts at 6:30 🤩

Did you know that nearly 1 in 3 children in the United States lives in a single-parent household? That means more than 23 million American children are growing up without one of their biological parents, most often their father. In fact, the United States has the highest rate of single-parent households in the world, according to 2024 data from the Pew Research Center.

My service initiative is Madyson’s Bridge: Bridging the Gap for Families. I grew up in a single-parent home with just my mom. I am one of the children behind these statistics. I know exactly how it feels—and I know that many children are going through the same experience right now. I was fortunate to have my mother and grandparents as my support system. My grandfather stepped up and taught me everything—from how to play catch, drive the golf cart, safely handle a firearm, and operate my first car, to giving me life advice. His passing last year was heartbreaking, but my mother and grandmother continue to be my source of strength and encouragement.

I know not every child has that kind of support at home. That’s why my goal is to help children understand that they canfind a support system—whether it’s a teacher, guidance counselor, coach, church mentor, or another trusted adult in their life.

As of 2024, about 41% of families in South Carolina are single-parent households, one of the highest rates in the country. In many counties, including Union County, this percentage is even higher. Children raised in father-absent homes face significantly increased risks:

They are up to 5 times more likely to live in poverty.
They are 4 times more likely to drop out of high school.
85% of youth in juvenile detention come from fatherless homes.
They are 4 times more likely to develop substance abuse issues.
63% of youth suicides occur in homes without fathers.
They are twice as likely to suffer from depression and emotional disorders.
Children in broken or unstable homes are also significantly more likely to become involved in crime or face long-term incarceration. These are not just numbers—they are real children facing real struggles.

However, because of the support system I had from my mother and my grandparents along with many other mentors in my life, I’ve been able to defy these odds. I graduated high school with a 4.68 GPA while maintaining a part time job, cheering on the varsity teams for both football and basketball, and competing in dance with 5 hours of practice weekly.

My goal through Madyson’s Bridge is to bring awareness to the serious and lasting impact of father absence and broken families. I want children in our school systems to know that they are not alone, and that there are people who love them, support them, and want to see them succeed. I also want the adults in our communities and across our state to understand that these children need us.

We must be their voice when they have none, their vision when they can’t see hope, and the hand they hold when everything feels like it’s falling apart. No child should feel abandoned. With compassion, commitment, and community, we can help bridge the gap.
