Three angles, and knowing them makes the whole thing make sense.

Toe is whether your wheels point straight ahead or slightly in or out. It is the one that scrubs tires away fastest when it is wrong.

Camber is whether the top of the tire leans in or out. Wrong camber wears one edge of the tread and nothing else.

Caster is the angle of the steering axis, and it is what brings the wheel back to center after a turn.

Two things genuinely worth doing while you are thinking about it.

Have your battery tested, because heat is what damages a battery and the first cool morning is what exposes it, usually at the worst possible time.

And check your wipers, which have been baking in the sun and getting hammered by afternoon storms all summer. They will quit exactly when you need them.

This is the single most common way people waste money on a vehicle.

Putting a fresh set of tires on a car that is out of alignment means the new set starts wearing unevenly from the first mile. You paid for fifty thousand miles and the vehicle is set up to deliver half of that.

The alignment costs a fraction of the tires. Skipping it to save that fraction is how you end up buying the tires twice.

Tyler fills up in October, and the run up starts now. Family in town, more traffic on Loop 323, and a lot of us putting more miles on than usual.

Five minutes before all that starts. Tire pressure and tread. Every light, with somebody standing behind the car while you press the brake. Wiper blades, which have taken a summer of sun and afternoon storms.

Small things now, so the busy weeks are just busy rather than complicated.

East Texas afternoons in September bring rain, and our roads run under heavy tree cover that keeps pavement wet long after the sky clears.

Two things matter more here than the mild winter would suggest.

Tread depth, because water has to go somewhere and worn tread cannot move it. Hydroplaning starts well before a tire looks bald.

And brakes, because stopping distance on wet pavement is meaningfully longer than on dry.

Shocks and struts wear out so gradually that you adjust to it without noticing, which is why people are genuinely surprised how different their car feels afterward.

Worth paying attention to. A clunk over bumps. The front end diving hard when you brake. A floaty, unsettled feel on the highway. Or cupped, scalloped wear across your tires.
