One Minute w/ Coach Kevin Green

Fresh off the Jack and Jill’s Downhill Marathon, Coach Kevin Green takes a minute to talk about two things every marathoner needs to hear: how to recover well and don’t spiral when the race doesn’t go your way.

Protein after a marathon helps kickstart the repair process, but recovery is not just physical. Sometimes you also have to recover mentally from a race that didn’t match expectations. Take the lesson, take care of the body, and get ready for what’s next.

Practice your transitions in the same order every time.
Grab your helmet. Glasses. Shoes. Go.
The goal is to make the process automatic. Practice until each step happens without hesitation, because race-day pressure is not the time to remember what comes next. A simple, repeatable routine keeps you calm, prevents mistakes, and gets you moving faster.
And remember: you can practice before and after every bike ride (even if it's on the trainer), by running to your bike and practicing your mount and as well as practicing your dismount at the end of each ride. Your transitions could be the difference in a podium or WC slot.

Strong showing from Layne Cross at the Jack and Jill’s Downhill Marathon in North Bend, Washington!

Layne ran 3:42:38, a great result for her considering she has been balancing a busy work schedule and had to work with limited mileage during this build. The training block may not have been perfect, but Layne showed up, trusted her fitness, and still was able to put together a strong marathon.

Coach Kevin Green aka Marathon Man also jumped in on the fun and ran 3:20:26. Of course, we should mention it was a downhill course… because at this point, at his age, he will gladly accept a little help from gravity. 😂

Great job, Layne and Coach Kevin on the strong performances!

Fall races are built long before the starting line and we help athletes reach their next level. If you feel like you have plateaued or are struggling to reach your goals we can give you a fresh perspective and dial in your training volume and intensities.

Whether you’re training for your first 5K, chasing a marathon PR, preparing for a fall triathlon, or hoping for a breakthrough cross country season, race-day success starts with what you do now.

At Fly Tri Racing, coaching is about more than putting workouts on a calendar. It starts with getting to know you- your goals, experience, strengths, schedule, injury history, and life outside of training. From there, we build a plan around the athlete you are and the athlete you’re working to become.

Our certified coaches combine real-world experience, performance science, and consistent communication to take the guesswork out of training. When appropriate, we use tools such as blood lactate testing, VO₂ max testing, gait analysis, and heart rate or power data to better understand what you need.

But the most important part of coaching is the relationship.
Your coach is there to answer questions, adjust training when life happens, keep you accountable, and help you understand the purpose behind the work. You’ll know what you’re doing, why you’re doing it, and how it is preparing you for race day.

Fall racing season will be here before you know it, and the work that shapes your season has already begun.

Ready to stop guessing and start training with purpose? Let's chat.

Tough day at Boise 70.3 🔥🚴‍♂️🏃‍♂️

The swim was canceled, turning the race into a rolling-start bike/run format, and Boise brought the heat with temperatures reaching around 91 degrees on the run. Not exactly an easy day to race.

Elvin Alemán finished in 5:35:41, battling through the heat and staying tough when the day became more about managing conditions than chasing perfect splits.

Zander Simone also had a very strong day, finishing in 4:26:30. For Zander, this race served as a great rehearsal for Ironman Maryland on September 19th. It was a chance to practice ex*****on, pacing, fueling, and handling adversity when race day does not go exactly as planned.

Great work, Elvin and Zander! 🔥

Strong weekend for Raymond Ruiz at the San Francisco Marathon weekend 🔥🏃‍♂

Raymond ran 1:59:08 in the half marathon, finishing less than two minutes off his lifetime PR, and this wasn’t even the main goal race.

Even more impressive, he did it after a solid 1:30 bike ride the day before, so he wasn’t exactly coming in on fresh legs. 😅

For a B race, this was a great sign that the fitness. Almost matching a lifetime PR while carrying some fatigue says a lot about where things are headed.

Strong run, smart effort, and more to come!

Climbing well on the bike is about managing your effort, selecting the right gear and keeping your movement smooth. It's not just about producing more power.
That becomes even more important during the summer. Heat increases the cardiovascular cost of riding, so a climb that normally feels manageable can quickly become too aggressive.
Shift early, stay controlled at the bottom and focus on maintaining a steady cadence. Most riders lose more time and energy from surging than they gain by attacking the first part of a climb.
The strongest climb is not always the fastest climb.
It is the one that allows you to keep riding well after you reach the top.
