We're celebrating a big year here at Fitzpatrick Architects!

Steve Fitzpatrick turned 70 today and he told us that his only birthday wish was to go water skiing, so naturally, we knew exactly what to get him. 🌊

This year also marks our 40th year anniversary as a company. Four decades of designing buildings, building relationships, and growing a firm that we're proud to call ours. And after all that time, Steve's idea of a good birthday is still getting out on the water.

We can get behind that. 😎

Happy 70th, Steve! Here’s to 40 years of Fitzpatrick and many more years of making cool things together.

What do you think makes a great learning environment?

As we wrap up our Then & Now 📚 series, we're looking at a project that shows how educational spaces can evolve alongside the students and communities they serve.

The UT Tyler School Of Nursing 🩺

The School of Nursing has grown significantly since its early days. In 2023, our team began work with UT Tyler on an expansion and renovation of the Braithwaite Building, adding 47,000 square feet of new space and renovating 10,000 square feet of the existing building. The project added classrooms, student collaboration spaces, faculty areas, and advanced simulation environments designed to replicate real clinical settings.

The result is an environment where future nurses can learn, practice, collaborate, and prepare for the realities of patient care; helping UT Tyler expand its capacity to educate the nurses East Texas and communities across Texas need.

And that's a wrap on our Then & Now series! As students head back to school across East Texas, we're grateful for the opportunity to look back at some of the educational spaces we've helped shape along the way.

Smith County Courthouse // Tyler, Texas

Pardon the mess! There’s a lot happening behind the walls of the new Smith County Courthouse.

While the exterior progress is easy to spot, most people won’t get to see the interior until the doors open. So today, we’re giving you a look inside a few of the courtrooms as construction continues.

These courtrooms are still very much in progress, but they offer a first look at some of the spaces that will serve Smith County for decades to come. From the courtroom layout to the details beginning to come together throughout the interior, each phase brings the vision for this new civic landmark a little closer to reality.

Our Then & Now 📚 series continues with a project that took a familiar space and gave it an entirely new purpose.

Introducing: Ecoland Early Learning Center 🌱

Before it became EcoLand, this building in Kilgore served as a Head Start facility. After two years of construction, the building was transformed into a hands-on, multisensory learning center designed to make learning come alive for young children.

Today, EcoLand gives Pre-K through first-grade students opportunities to explore science, the environment, and the world around them through interactive learning centers and hands-on experiences.

As we head back to school, we're taking a look at a few of the educational spaces we've had the opportunity to help shape over the years.

First up: Tyler High School 🦁

Formerly known as John Tyler High School, Tyler High has been part of the Tyler community for generations. Through a major renovation and addition, the campus was reimagined with new learning spaces, collaboration areas, courtyards, and a new face for the school; all while continuing to serve the students and community that call it home.
