Looking for something to read this summer? We've got three new Open Table Faith book clubs starting soon and we'd LOVE for you to join us!
1. A STONE FOR A PILLOW
by Madeline L'Engle
Tuesdays 12pm
June 30 - August 4
DESCRIPTION: In this book for the curious, spiritual seeker, Madeleine L’Engle offers relevant lessons drawn from the life of Jacob from the Old Testament. Here, the son of Isaac becomes a spiritual companion to L’Engle, equipping her to deal with earthly and psychological struggles. Throughout her journey, L’Engle offers contemporary answers to questions that burden modern day readers and believers.
2. PLURIFORM LOVE: An Open & Relational Theology of Well-Being
by Thomas Jay Oord
Thursdays 12pm
July 2 - July 30
DESCRIPTION: A strong case can be made that love is the core of Christian faith. And yet Christians often fail to give love center stage in biblical studies and theology. And most fail to explain what they mean by love. Why is this? Thomas Jay Oord explores this question and offers ground-breaking answers. Oord addresses leading Christian thinkers today and of yesteryear. He explains biblical forms of love, such as agape, philia, hesed, and ahavah.
3. THE JUSTICE OF JESUS
by Joash P. Thomas
Thursdays 2pm
July 2 - July 30
DESCRIPTION: In The Justice of Jesus, public theologian and international speaker Joash Thomas reveals how authentic biblical faith naturally leads to caring for the vulnerable and working for positive change in our neighborhoods. Drawing from his unique perspective serving in churches across different cultures and continents, Thomas shows how justice isn't just a "social issue"--it's at the very heart of what it means to follow Christ.
Maybe the goal isn’t raising kids who never question faith…
maybe it’s raising kids who never have to recover from it.
Kids who aren’t taught fear before love.
Kids who don’t feel shame for being human.
Kids who know they’re safe to ask questions, think deeply, and be fully themselves.
That’s not rebellion.
That’s breaking cycles.
Maybe deconstructing isn’t the dangerous part.
Maybe the real harm is being taught that asking questions makes you “rebellious,” “lukewarm,” or “hard to love.”
Healthy things can handle curiosity.
Healthy faith doesn’t collapse because someone asked “why.”
A lot of us weren’t losing faith.
We were losing fear, shame, performance, and the version of God we were handed that never made room for honesty in the first place.
Questions aren’t the enemy of faith.
Silence is.
What’s one question you were told you shouldn’t ask? 👀
Maybe the real question isn’t
“Can women be in ministry?”
but why we were taught they couldn’t.
💬 What were you taught growing up?
