I taught a two hour Carotid Restraint Class as part of a 16 hour Law Enforcement Use of Force Class for a Firefighter / Paramedic / Arson Investigator and future SWAT Tactical Medic tonight.

Well trained Officers use less force because they use more effective force at the appropriate time.

If you are a professional, train like a professional. I'm very impressed with these guys taking personal responsibility for their own safety and training.

If you are a Law Enforcement Officer, especially one that doesn't give 100% in Use of Force Training or that relies on the tools on your belt to keep you safe, you need to watch this video.

The suspect had many chances to disengage and run but chose instead to fight the Officer and try to kill him.

The Officer in this video had no other option than to yell for help and hope someone called 911 for him.

It appeared to me that the Officer had never imagined it trained for what he would do in that situation. There's a distinct difference between fighting to save your life and fighting to stop the threat. In all situations, stopping the threat is the most effective way of saving your life.

I'm glad the Officer survived and I hope this was a wake up call for him.

This is why I'm constantly pushing Officers to train hard. Your life depends on it.

If your dreams don't scare you, you're not dreaming big enough. Every time you face your fears you get stronger. When you constantly push the limits, you find out there are no limits.

I just finished giving a lecture on Law Enforcement Use of Force to a group of citizens who wanted to take the time to learn more about how Officers handle violent confrontation with suspects. The more educated the public is in how Law Enforcement Officers do their jobs and why force is sometimes necessary, the more they will support them. Great discussions tonight!

Always trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, it probably is. These Deputies trusted their instincts and it saved their lives.
