Father’s Day can certainly bring a range of emotions. My father has always been a godly, wise, and steady influence in my life, and I am blessed to still have him, so Father’s Day is a good day for me. For those who had wonderful fathers who have already passed on, Father’s Day is likely bitter sweet, a mix of sadness and gratitude. For some, who never knew their father, or who had a father who wasn’t who he needed to be, Father’s Day can be very hard.
Regardless of whether yesterday was a good day or a bad day for you, there is an incredible truth in scripture that I pray will encourage you today. The bible teaches us that we can address God as Father. That’s right, the one and only God of the universe; the only true Sovereign; the omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient God invites you to call him Father. Actually, the proper term is Abba, Father, which means “dearest daddy.”
If it seems like you aren’t worthy to call God “dearest daddy”, you are correct, you are aren’t. That’s the beauty of the gospel. By the grace of God and the power of the gospel, we are brought into fellowship with the Father, and we are adopted as sons and daughters of God.
It breaks my heart to think of the hurt that ungodly or absent fathers can cause. But I’m so thankful for a heavenly Father who can fill that void the lives of those who choose to call Him father. He is a father who will never leave you nor forsake you. You can know the love of the perfect Father simply by placing your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear. Instead, you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father!”- Romans 8:15

“Therefore brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship.” Romans 12:1-2
One of the great challenges of living out our faith is the issue of absolute surrender. God demands it, we resist it. In fact, “present your bodies as a living sacrifice” sounds pretty awful when you take that phrase out of context. So we hold back. We protect our desires, our plans, and our agenda because we think we know best. We refuse surrender.
But in view of the mercies of God…the truth that God is so powerful, so loving, and so merciful that he can take even the worst things and work them out for your good and his glory. The depth of the riches of his knowledge and wisdom is so incredible that we can’t begin to understand his ways. From Him and through him and to him are all things!
In view of those things… presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice doesn’t sound so bad. It sounds really good actually. It sounds amazing! Because I have no power, I have no wisdom, I have no knowledge, and all of my plans end up causing pain and heartache. My judgment is rarely correct and my ways are tainted by sin.
So yeah, in view of the mercies of God, I surrender.
The imagery of a “living” sacrifice is pretty amazing. In the Old Testament, sacrifices were brought to the altar alive and ended up dead. We show up dead in our sin and are made alive by the power of the gospel!
When we surrender, we don’t lose. We win. It is only through absolute surrender that God can truly transform us into His image and use us for His glory.
