This meme is floating around now as road construction season begins, and it’s correct. Not only does the zipper merge work better, it results in lower anxiety and road rage incidents. Yet, in every comments section there is significant pushback to it, so here’s a shot at clearing up some misconceptions.

▪️The main objection is that it doesn’t work in reality, or only works if everyone follows it. The fact is that it DOES work in reality, there have been repeated studies in many states confirming this, as well as computer modeling with AI.

▪️North Carolina researchers found that zipper merges could reduce traffic backups by as much as 50% in areas where there are lane reductions, or drop-offs. In one site, congestion was reduced from 6 to 3 miles and time spent in traffic decreased dramatically, saving 15-25 min.

▪️A Kentucky study looked at several states’ research that showed mostly positive results. In Nebraska, a study found late merge decreased forced merges by 75%, lane straddles by 30% and queues by 50%, while increasing capacity through the work zone by 20%.

▪️There is a significant caveat to the zipper merge, which the Kentucky study noted. If traffic is light it doesn’t work, drivers should simply merge when they have room. It also doesn’t work as well if some drivers (particularly truck drivers) go vigilante and block the lane.

▪️Vigilante drivers blocking people from late merging simply reverts it to the less efficient early merge scenario. It doesn’t help anyone and leads to road rage and anxiety.

▪️But signage can greatly improve compliance. For example, “use both lanes during backup” and a merge symbol with “take turns” at the merge point. Also, educating drivers about zipper merges helps. Combined, these tools can dramatically improve traffic flow in construction zones.

▪️The early merge philosophy, where signs say “lane closed ahead, merge left” causes chaos and unnecessary backups. Everyone has a different idea of when to merge. Some think it’s polite to merge right away, then get mad at those who wait. It’s just a poor method.

▪️So adopt the zipper merge if you haven’t already, and don’t be the driver who blocks the lane people have the right to use. You are the a-hole, not them.

To install mechanical ductwork and equipment on commercial construction projects in accordance with mechanical code and under the guidance of our Journeyman. This position requires manual labor and daily learning in the field.

Vision Air Services is seeking a PART-TIME driver for a fast-paced delivery position delivering materials and equipment! Successful Drivers follow our safety procedures and become a fully engaged team member to a great hard-working team. Come check us out!

Compensation starts at $15 an hour plus benefits!

Shifts start 7a.m. and generally end at 3:30pm

Ideal candidates are reliable, energetic, and willing to do things the Vision Air way. Punctuality and dependability are a MUST.

This position is a fast paced, physically demanding and highly rewarding job. We operate 3 days a week, 8 hours a day and work in all weather conditions.

Comply with all safety rules and policies.
Deliver a wide variety of items, up to 200 per-day.
Conduct inspections of vehicle prior to departing to deliver goods.
Follow delivery driving routes and time schedules.
Load, unload, prepare, inspect, and operate the delivery vehicle.
Complete inspections of vehicle after route has been completed.
Safe keep of all items provided by Vision Air Services.
Vision Air shirts will be provided.
Qualifications:

Must be at least 21 years old.
Clean driving record (no accidents or moving violations in last 3 years).
Must be able to lift packages weighing up to 50 lbs.
Must have a valid driver’s license.
Job requirements:

Must be able to work independently in a high paced environment.
Must be able to pass a motor vehicle record check (1 point/ticket, no DUI's, and no suspensions).
Must have a valid driver’s license.
