A parked car can become deadly in minutes.

As temperatures rise, never leave a child alone in a vehicle — not even for a moment. Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a car can climb rapidly, putting children at risk of heat-related illness or death.

Busy schedules, fatigue, and changes in routine can happen to anyone. Create reminders to help ensure every child gets out safely:
- Place your purse, briefcase, work badge, or phone in the back seat next to your child.
- Keep a stuffed animal in your child’s car seat and move it to the front seat when your child is riding as a visual reminder.
- Ask your childcare provider to call if your child doesn’t arrive as expected.
- Always check the back seat before locking your vehicle.

A simple reminder can save a life. Look before you lock.

With dangerous heat indices expected across the area, staying hydrated is one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself from heat-related illness.

Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink water. Start hydrating early in the day and continue drinking fluids throughout the day. If you know you’ll be spending time outdoors, try to “pre-hydrate” by drinking water before heading outside and continue taking regular water breaks while you’re in the heat.

Heat safety tips:
• Drink plenty of water throughout the day
• Limit alcohol and excessive caffeine, which can contribute to dehydration • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing
• Take frequent breaks in air-conditioned or shaded areas
• Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day when possible
• Check on older adults, young children, and pets

Signs of dehydration can include:
• Thirst
• Dry mouth
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Fatigue
• Dark-colored urine

If you begin feeling ill from the heat, move to a cooler location, drink water, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.

Stay weather-aware, plan ahead, and take the heat seriously. A little preparation can help prevent a medical emergency.

MISSING JUVENILE: AKAYLA TOLE

The Broken Arrow Police Department is requesting the public’s assistance in locating 14-year-old Akayla Tole.

Akayla left her home around 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 11, and has not returned. She is approximately 5’2” tall. She left her phone at home, which is out of the ordinary for her.

If you have seen Akayla or have any information regarding her whereabouts, please contact the Broken Arrow Police Department at 918-259-8400. Any information, no matter how small, may assist investigators.
