People love to hate ABA.
They call it abusive.
They say itâs about compliance and control.
But hereâs what they donât see:
Without ABA, Charlie wouldnât communicate.
He wouldnât brush his teeth, or sit safely in a car seat.
ABA didnât âfixâ him, it gave him tools to live a safer, more peaceful life.
People talk about âacceptance,â but to me acceptance without support is just neglect. Itâs great to âacceptâ autism but when you have a nonverbal child with no sense of danger, not trying to teach them those skills in the name of acceptance is just ridiculous.
If you think ABA is abuse, youâve never lived with profound autism.
Youâve never watched your child swallow screws, or bang his head until he bleeds, or cry because he canât tell you what hurts.
ABA didnât harm my child.
It helped him find his potential.
It taught him things people take for granted.
If it didnât work for your child, too bad. Itâs not for everyone, itâs not one-size-fits-all but itâs helped many and the disinformation has to stop.
