Quite the transition going on at the Harrell Ranch.

The ranch is looking a little different these days. After much research and debate, we’ve purchased our first cows and bull to begin building a commercial herd of Red Angus-Fleckvieh cattle. We acquired them from Chad Ledbetter of Okmulgee, OK—a highly respected, third-generation cattleman whose program we deeply admire. We’re excited about what he has produced and hopeful for success in this new venture.

It’s been 39 years since we’ve run a commercial herd, having focused instead on raising a large herd of registered Longhorns. While this marks a big change, we are energized by this new transformation. Rebel HR will still keep a few Longhorn ladies for breeding, and our new Black Angus bull, Maverick, will be pairing with some of them.

There’s a renewed sense of excitement around the ranch, and we’re enjoying the process of building new memories together.

Got our steer HR Muddy Water in the Joe Chute for the first time yesterday. He wasn't sure about going in the chute but the guys coaxed him in and he did great. 123.4375" TTT👍

Harrell Ranch has become Harrell Zoo, but we are having fun again!!! We still have several Longhorns, and now horses, geese, goats, donkeys, Scottish Highlands, cats, puppies and soon a small commercial herd of Angus. Our son, Mike, is running the ranch, along with his full time job, and doing an excellent job of getting things done. He and our two full time employees, Dalton and Carlos, along with our bonus son, Joe, have the ranch looking darn good. If you are in the area, drop by and see all the changes.

We are sad to report that LLL Rosemary, one of our primary foundation cows, passed away on 12-21-24. She was born 9-25-2004 and was the perfect blend of line breeding that included double-bred Senator, double-bred Zhivago, and double-bred Pl***oy. She incorporated the best of Darol Dickenson and Owen McGill's genetics. She was a paternal half-sister to WS Jamakizm, who also had an iconic career that influenced many elite Longhorn programs in his day.

LLL Rosemary wasn't just another cow in the pasture, but a genetic powerhouse whose outstanding production graced not only our pastures, but those of many other programs. Her descendants are easy keepers with wonderful colors, several with over 100" TTT horns, and all with outstanding milking abilities.

When your genetics are so powerful that you have a noticeable impact on the Longhorn industry, you become a Legend, passing the same elite status on to your daughter (HR Slam's Rose), and grandson (Rebel HR), along with many others. In linebreeding LLL Rosemary we created HR Rosette, perhaps her most famous lineage.

LLL Rosemary has been a well-loved constant in our longhorn program. When we sold the herd last year, we kept her and a few other elderly ladies. We will miss her greatly.

To everything there is a season and after 35+ years in this business it is time for us to take a step back. It is with a mixture of pride, joy and sadness that we announce that Pat Henggeler of 1886 Cattle company has purchased the Harrell Ranch herd. We look forward to seeing how his vision for our herd will impact the industry in the future. We hope it brings him and all of you much success, as well as elevating the breed in general.

Our breeding success over the years has been partly due to advice from Dr. Bob Kropp and Justin Rombeck and we wish to thank them for helping achieve so many of our goals. Our employees, past and present, have taken great care of these magnificent animals in good times and bad and we couldn’t have done it without them.

We have kept a few “geriatric” gals and pets who enjoy those hand fed crunchies and make us smile. Time to circle the wagons and spend more time with family and friends and finally do some traveling. We will miss seeing everyone but still hope to participate in the future on a smaller scale. Many blessings to all.

HR Lucky 40 is the largest horned heifer we have ever raised for her age. Lucky 40 measured a whopping 69.75" TTT with 6 months to go until she turns 3. She is bagging up and will be dropping a calf in the very near future to Rebel HR. Her sire Pacific Cowboy 40 did so many great things for us in the 3 years he covered cows for us. On the dam side she goes back to Patriot HR, a son of Rebel HR as well as LLL Lucky.

Our second consignment is Melody and she is .75" TTT since late April and should make 90" TTT by her next birthday. She has a heifer calf at her side sired by Rebel HR and bred back the same way for an amazing 3 in 1 package. Her pedigree is stacked with breed greats. Don't miss out.

Our final consignment is CV Running Brook. She is a granddaughter of Hubbells 20 Gauge, and CV Cowboy Casanova. She also goes back to Coach and Working Woman. She has been a wonderful mother raising large framed calves that are very chill in their disposition. She has a heifer calf at side sired by Rebel HR and we have her safe in calf to Rebel HR for a 3 in 1 package. Her horns measured in at 87.25" TTT and she has grown a 1/2 inch since late April. You will love her as much as we have.

These three big-bodied and huge-horned cows will represent us at the Stockyard Sale on Memorial Day Weekend. We are retaining offspring from both of the mature cows, and on the heifer, we are retaining her dam which has been an exceptional producer, and sports 107" TH. Look forward to seeing you there.

Here are two of our up-and-coming sires that we are very excited about. The Rifleman HR is the last natural calf from the Legendary LLL Rosemary sired by RHF Sharpshooter. The second bull Ironman HR is a son of PC 40 out of Drag Iron Daugher and a full sister to Rebel HR.
Exciting things are on the horizon.
