On May 6th, the Tulsa Police Department and the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office raided our 6-year weekly protest in a massive show of force. We have heard a clear message from the citizens of Tulsa that this is not conduct they support since that day, but yet the charges remain: 4 arrests and 6 citations which still stand. In less than two weeks, (on our 6th birthday, in fact!) all 10 cases will go before the court and we will fight to protect our demonstrators.

But a fight in the courts is never what we wanted. All of this is a distraction from the real thing that brings us together, which is sharing food, water, clothes, and other resources with our neighbors who need them most. This remains our top priority and, as hurt and scared as many of us feel after experiencing City Hall’s behavior towards our work, we are eager to move past our current position with the city and reach a time when our energy is fully devoted to this task once again. It is for this reason that we are calling for a Global Day of Protest on 07/15 in advance of the Tulsa Food Not Bombs court conference. For this, we call upon our siblings in Food Not Bombs chapters across the world as well as anyone who has seen our story to relay our 3 simple demands to City Hall:

The City’s actions fundamentally violate the trust of Tulsa’s residents, who put their faith in an administration and Council that promised to address the root causes of homelessness with millions of our tax dollars, rather than using those same dollars to criminalize a protest and vital community resource. Beyond a mere apology, these demands are founded in a material analysis of the health and wellbeing of our neighbors and our ability to ensure they remain taken care of. Meeting these demands would not only atone for the missteps of the past, but demonstrate goodwill in the present and lay the groundwork for a more harmonious existence in the future. Today, we announce our plan for a better tomorrow and humbly request all of your help to make it happen!
