Criteria for a True Prophet
True prophets can be recognized through several key criteria:
• Their words are fulfilled: When a prophet's message comes to pass, it is evidence of their authenticity. Sometimes, unfulfilled prophecies may result from the prophet speaking from their own motives rather than from the Lord. Jeremiah 28:8-9 emphasizes that a true prophet is known when their word is fulfilled.
• They teach and command righteous behavior: True prophets call their followers to holiness and righteousness. Deuteronomy 13:1-4 warns against prophets or dreamers who perform signs and wonders but encourage the worship of other gods. Such individuals should not be followed, as God may be testing the people's love for Him.
• Their lives reflect godliness: The lifestyle of a true prophet mirrors their calling. Matthew 7:15-20 cautions against false prophets who come in sheep's clothing but inwardly lack repentance. True prophets are recognized by their fruits—qualities such as love, joy, peace, and patience. A good tree bears good fruit, while a bad tree bears bad fruit.
