As we open our Bibles to John 10:22, Jesus is walking in the winter, Hanukkah time, on the great porch of Herod’s Temple. It is incredible to find times in the Gospels that we can relate to.

Jesus was Teaching
John 10 in December

First, it was cold, and because of the weather, Jesus stayed on the eastern side of the Temple (John 10:22-23). This is the same place where the early church continued to meet (Acts 3:11; 5:12).

Second, it was during the month of December. Look at v. 22. This is the Jewish Feast of Dedication, more commonly called Hanukkah. This year, Jews celebrate Hanukkah, or the Feast of Lights, from December 9 to 16, remembering the re-consecration of the Temple after the desecration of the Holy of Holies in 170 BC by the Greek General Antiochus Epiphanes.

Finally, it was here that Jesus used the most enduring and comprehensive name for believers. In John 10, the term “sheep” is used 16 times (out of 40 times in all the New Testament and 21 times in John).

“My Sheep” is Christ's
Powerful Term for Believers

When you think about it Jesus comes as the Lamb, He calls His Church His flock, He calls Himself the True and Good Shepherd, and He calls those who lead His Church in His stead: shepherds (that is the meaning of the Greek word poimen), and it is usually translated, pastor.

There is only one designation of Christ that fills the New Testament. We are His sons and daughters, and His disciples and servants, but the most integrated term, into the fabric of the early church, as we are sheep, Christ is our Shepherd, and those who guard Christ's flock are shepherding, pastors.

Jesus calls us as believers more by one term in the Gospels “My Sheep” than any other term among those found outside the Gospels. My sheep is His description of us.

“My Sheep” is Christ’s Powerful Term for Believers: When you think about it Jesus comes as the Lamb, He calls His Church His flock, He calls Himself the True and Good Shepherd, and He calls those who lead His Church in His stead: shepherds (that is the meaning of the Greek word poimen), and it is usually translated pastor.

Why Does God Call Us His Sheep? It may be because sheep are the most helpless creatures known in zoology. They always lose their way. In the fantastic aggregation of entertainment and instruction that modern man calls the circus, you can see almost every known animal perform. Still, you will probably never see a trained sheep.

A dog or cat, all the farm animals, and everything that can be caught in traps may be taught to perform for the amusement of man, except the sheep.

Perhaps the Lord God, considering the utter helplessness of the human family, just shook His head and said, “We will call them sheep.” What Jesus Sees in Us His Sheep: 1. As Sheep: We Need His Constant Guidance.

PRO-WORK, PRO-JUSTICE, PRO-LIFE, PRO-MARRIAGE--Biblical Convictions of Grace-Energized Men & Women

Last week we began a look at how to apply the Scriptures to our current moral and political climate in American society. I shared that the Lord has revealed His convictions very clearly in His Word. God is Pro-Life, Pro-Marriage, Pro-Justice, and Pro-Work.

We then defined those convictions as the Bible does, that God is:

• GOD is Pro-Life—God is opposed to Abortion and Euthanasia.

• GOD is Pro-Marriage—God is opposed to Gay Unions, as well as divorce, adultery, fornication, homosexuality, lesbianism, po*******hy, and every other form of immorality.

• GOD is Pro-Justice—God is opposed to murder, violence, discrimination, prejudice, and abuse of the weak, poor, and unborn; He invented capital punishment, and commands societies to have a just legal system.

• GOD is Pro-Work—God is against indolence, sloth, unbiblical entitlements, oppression of the poor by the rich, and every form of false hope produced by gambling and lotteries.

This morning we are going to look at how a grace-energized man develops his convictions from God's Word. Each day we all have to live and work in a world so much like the world of the First Century. When the aged Paul sat to write his young disciple named Titus , his days like ours were full of both false teachings about God, and wrong behavior among the believers.

Paul had to live and serve under an Empire that swarmed with citizens, slaves, and commercialism. Rome and all its blatant materialism reigned over nearly the entire known world of Paul’s day.

How were Christians to live in the world of the New Testament? That question was especially vital to believers in the culture of Rome—rife with greed, gambling, and constant oppression of the poor. Paul sits down to write to that very challenge the saints faced as they also had to live, work, and vote.

Start a DAILY HABIT—The Devotional Method

Before anything else, news, music vids, games, FB Reels, TikTok clips--start your day with HEARING GOD'S VOICE! Take some notes, in three parts:

1--Make up a TITLE: Read the passage through, then summarize in one sentence.

2--Note some personal LESSONS: Note as many lessons, truths, and doctrines as you can find in your own words. If you want to invest the time, use a Study Bible or a good resource like Logos.

3--Write a heartfelt APPLICATION PRAYER: Write a prayer in which you ask the Lord to unleash one of those truths or lessons you found—into YOUR own life.

That WILL change your life if you invite God in through His Word.

Our Biblical Convictions as Citizens of Heaven While Living On Earth (Romans 13). We have been examining the Discipline of Truth: that God is the source of truth, and that we are to know and defend His truth. So that leads us to ask: What are the Biblical Convictions—of a Citizen of Heaven while living on Earth?

If I were to apply the truths or doctrines of the Scriptures as far as they relate to the current climate in human society, I would say that God has revealed Himself in His Word as:

GOD is Pro-Life—God is opposed to Abortion and Euthanasia. He is the Creator of Life, the One who grants conception.

GOD is Pro-Marriage—God is opposed to Gay Unions, as well as divorce, adultery, fornication, po*******hy, and any other form of immorality.

GOD is Pro-Justice—God is opposed to murder, violence, discrimination, prejudice, and abuse of the weak, poor, and unborn; He invented capital punishment, and commands societies to have a just legal system.

POINT ONE—BIBLICAL CONVICTIONS START WITH THE BIBLE

Open with me to our starting place for Biblical Convictions, Romans 13.

As Paul sat to write perhaps the clearest words to frame the Biblical convictions of a Citizen of Heaven, living on earth—he was sitting in Corinth. Looking down across the city must have grieved his soul. Paul lived around gymnasiums filled with n**e men who were wrestling, boxing, and sprinting. In the distance seeing the men and women going into the bathhouses, brothels, and heading up the trail to the shrine prostitutes up on the acro-Corinthos must have even more grieved his Spirit-filled heart. Just as it grieved the Lord He served.

Just a couple of days by ship from Corinth was the center of the Earth in Paul’s day—Rome. Swarming with soldiers, citizens, slaves, and commercialism, Rome reigned over nearly all of the known world of Paul’s day. How were Christians to live in the world of the New Testament? Especially in the capital city of Rome--rife with homosexuality, abortions, gambling, infanticide, slavery, oppression of the poor, egalitarianism, and every form of the occult?

Paul sits down to write to that very city where saints had to live, work, and vote. He writes to them these seven verses that summarize their responsibilities of citizenship on earth. We often forget that the Roman World had much citizen involvement. There was a long history in Rome of elected bodies that variously guided, counseled, and sometimes legislated the Roman World. Although there was an Emperor who ruled, there was still much about daily life that was determined by a very advanced and regulated representative government.

So, what were Paul's instructions in this advanced and thriving world of nearly worldwide power? Look with me to Romans 13. This passage has long been regarded as the ultimate statement of Biblical Responsibilities for Christians and their relationship to whatever government they are under.

SEVEN KEYS TO LIVING A SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE: USEFULNESS TO GOD IS NOT EASY.

What does that mean? “Useful to God” means that God sees, honors, blesses, and rewards with endless honor that person.

Anything in our lives that is not pleasing to God will vanish away, turn to smoke & ashes, and be forgotten. Most people do not use God’s standard for significance, and therefore their lives will amount to nothing.

What’s interesting is that out of all the thousands of Levites serving in the Temple in the First Century, Zacharias is one of the only ones we know by name. So we have been given a special God-given insight.

TRUTH-1: GOD KNEW WHERE TO FIND ZACHARIAS

God does not require that we have a big, flashy, well-known life to be significant to Him.

God says that all that matters is: what He sees, what He thinks, and how He is pleased with our lives.
So as we read Luke we see this is not a flashy, outgoing couple. They are dutifully, behind the scenes in their lives. Zacharias & Elizabeth were just a tiny, almost insignificant part of a community of thousands of Levitical priests, grouped into 24 teams that took their turns on duty at the Temple of God.

Zacharias was one of 24,000 priests who served 2 weeks each year by rotation. As an aged man, it was a supreme honor given once in a lifetime to serve at the altar of incense.

The incense was offered daily before the morning sacrifice at about 9 AM, and after the evening sacrifice, about 3 PM in the afternoon. It was probably the evening offering that was assigned to Zacharias.

Application: God knows your address. You can be plain, unknown to most people in the world, never achieving public fame, live as an ordinary person, having a non-descript life: and still be living a Spirit-filled life, useful to God.

The Kingdom Invasion of God Promised in the Old Testament is Launched in REVELATION 5:

Each day, each of us are to ask God to RULE our life: Matthew 6:10 (NKJV) Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.

Our biggest goal for each day was established by Jesus: Matthew 6:33 (NKJV) But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
