Recent research from the National Association of Realtors and major real estate news outlets shows a clear trend in 2026:
Agent count is declining and expected to keep dropping.
The reasons are stacking up:
‣ Higher interest rates slowing transaction volume
‣ Consumers are more informed and selective than ever
‣ Lead generation is getting harder without real systems
Many agents entered during a hot market and weren’t built for a shift
And now… AI is accelerating everything
AI isn’t replacing great agents.
But I'll for sure say it is exposing average ones.
Consumers can now access data, insights, and tools instantly.
Which means if you don’t bring strategy, negotiation, and real value… you’re easier to replace.
This isn’t a short-term dip.
Industry leaders are projecting a continued reduction in active agents over the next several years as the market tightens and technology advances.
The industry isn’t dying.
It’s getting sharper.
So the question is simple.
Are we witnessing a healthy reset… or the beginning of a long-term consolidation of agents?
