Malicious USB Drives Targetinging Global Targets with SOGU and SNOWYDRIVE Malware 07/17/2023

🦠MALWARE MONDAY ALERT🦠

China-based attackers are at it again, this time infecting and leveraging USB flash drives to deploy SOGU, a malicious back-door program.

"Targets include construction and engineering, business services, government, health, transportation, and retail in Europe, Asia, and the U.S."

How to protect yourself and your business:

1. Scan all flash drives for malicious content prior to connecting it to your network.

2. Place restrictions on flash drive usage.

3. Utilize secure cloud based drive options to transfer files instead.

4. Upgrade from an antivirus to an EDR/XDR (Endpoint Detection and Response). An ai-powered security suite that outperforms typical antivirus.

🌟 Tech Tip Tuesday! 🌟

Is your work PC acting sluggish? Don't worry, we've got a quick fix for you! Today, let's tackle the common issue of slow startup times. Follow these simple steps to speed up your PC and boost your productivity:

1️⃣ Clear the clutter: Remove unnecessary startup programs. Go to the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), select the "Startup" tab, and disable any programs you don't need to launch at startup. This will help your PC start faster.

2️⃣ Disk cleanup: Open File Explorer, right-click on your system drive (usually C:), and select "Properties." Click on "Disk Cleanup" and let it scan. Check all the boxes for temporary files, recycle bin, and thumbnails, then click "OK" to clean up the disk space and improve performance.

3️⃣ Update and optimize: Keep your PC's operating system and drivers up to date. Check for updates in the Windows Update settings and install any available updates. Additionally, ensure that your antivirus software and other critical programs are updated for better performance and security.

4️⃣ Restart regularly: Restarting your PC periodically helps clear out temporary files and refresh system resources. Make it a habit to restart your computer at least once a week to maintain optimal performance.

Remember, a little maintenance can go a long way in keeping your work PC running smoothly! If you need further assistance or have any other tech-related questions, feel free to reach out to us. Stay tuned for more Tech Tip Tuesdays!

Malware Monday: Authors of malware come up with all kinds of tricks to evade antivirus and security. What's the easiest way? Convince the user to run it themselves!

We're all familiar with file extensions, .txt .pdf .mp3 that describe what the file is, but what happens when I rename a program which has a ".exe" "essay.pdf.exe"?
Windows by default hides file extensions so all you will see is "essay.pdf" without realizing it is actually a program. So you click it expecting to open a pdf but you really are running the program. The I Love You virus from 2000 spread worldwide by using this technique.

Although this is a very dated technique which isn't terribly common now, it does demonstrate that no matter how good your network security is, your first and last line of defense is always an educated user.

Train your employees on security basics! Contact us today to set up a training seminar for your employees!

On this day in 2000, the ILOVEYOU (aka Love Letter) worm began to spread to PCs around the world via email. It would eventually infect millions of computers and cost approximately $5.5 to $8.7 billion in damages.
