We just finished processing this detailed 3D render of a neighborhood block. Captured and built from our drone imagery. Models like this allow us to analyze site layouts, grading, and infrastructure in a way that flat maps simply can’t match.

Whether it’s for site planning, drainage studies, or structural evaluations, these high-resolution aerial models bring a whole new perspective to engineering projects.

We see a lot of barndominiums where spray foam insulation is applied directly to the inside of the metal siding. While closed-cell spray foam does provide insulation, air sealing, and even acts as a v***r retarder, it is doing all the work of the thermal envelope and this is where I start having personal issues with the standard building practices.

Why do I not like this? There’s no dedicated weather-resistive barrier (WRB) like a ZIP system or Tyvek. I would even be happy with polyethylene sheets on the exterior to act as a WRB.

If water gets behind the siding — through a screw, seam, or lap joint — there’s no drainage plane. It can get trapped at the foam/metal interface. This is a huge serviceability issue.

Over time, this can lead to condensation, corrosion, mold, and durability issues. Did I mention MOLD

Code technically requires a WRB (IRC R703.2). While spray foam “sort of” covers the role, it isn’t the best long-term solution and not something this Engineer likes to see.
