For people who are blind or low vision, travel can be as simple as a trip to the grocery store.
In this interview, Fred, who has been blind since infancy due to retinoblastoma, shares how accessibility is about more than major destinations. It's about the freedom to navigate everyday life independently.
Tactile indicators and clearly defined pathways provide critical information that helps blind and low vision pedestrians move through their communities with confidence.
Because travel isn't just crossing a country. Sometimes it's crossing a street.

Innovation is hitting the sidewalks of Tyler, Texas.
The City of Tyler is deploying robotic technology to assess sidewalk accessibility and support its ADA Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan. Working alongside engineering firm Kimley-Horn, these robots will collect detailed data across nearly 95 miles of sidewalks, trails, intersections, and transit stops, helping identify barriers to improve accessibility for all residents.
By leveraging robotics and data-driven insights, cities can gather more consistent, comprehensive infrastructure information while reducing the time and resources required for traditional field assessments. This is a great example of how emerging technology can support smarter planning and accessibility improvements.

Travel changes when you experience the world through someone else’s perspective.
In this episode of The Daily, journalist Andy Isaacson reflects on traveling through India alongside blind and visually impaired travelers, exploring how sound, texture, movement, and atmosphere can shape a deeper understanding of place. As one takeaway from the episode explains: “The idea is that everyone experiences the world differently and no single viewpoint can capture the whole picture.”
For those working in accessibility and the built environment, the podcast is a powerful reminder that inclusive design is not just about compliance, but about recognizing that people navigate and experience spaces in fundamentally different ways.

June is , a timely reminder that the foundation of a safe community is accessible infrastructure.
Safety in public spaces depends on clear, reliable cues. Whether it’s a transit platform or a busy intersection, TekWay® detectable warning surfaces provide the high-contrast visibility and tactile recognition necessary for pedestrians who are blind or have low vision to navigate with confidence.
By prioritizing ADA compliance and utilizing durable, slip-resistant materials, we can reduce risks and ensure our built environments are safer for everyone.

Upgrade accessibility without sacrificing flow.
Angled detectable warning tiles are designed to maintain optimal dome spacing and ADA compliance while covering more travel range for unique layouts and specialty projects.
Available in federal and natural colors with custom options, these tiles are perfect for structures and pathways where standard straight runs don’t fit the design.

Shared spaces only work when everyone can navigate them safely.
In this interview, we hear firsthand how tactile indicators are crucial tools that blind and low vision pedestrians rely on to safely navigate their environment.
Trapezoid delineators help create a detectable, navigable edge that can be felt underfoot or with a cane, not just seen. By clearly separating shared pathways without adding barriers, they improve predictability for all users.

Increasing accessibility means extending beyond the built environment into nature.
Birding organizations and parks are working to make outdoor spaces more accessible for people with mobility disabilities through better trail design, adaptive equipment, and inclusive programming, because everyone deserves the opportunity to experience nature with dignity.
One such accessible trail is right here in Tucson, Arizona at the Felix Paseos Park.

Tactile Direction Indicators help create safer, more navigable transit environments for pedestrians who are blind or have low vision. Designed with raised, elongated bars, these surfaces provide a clear path of travel across mass transit platforms where natural guidelines may not exist.
TDIs guide pedestrians confidently toward transit stops, boarding areas, and key destinations, helping improve navigation and accessibility throughout busy transit spaces.
