On April 10, 1912, the RMS Titanic set sail on its maiden and final voyage from Southampton, England, bound for New York City. Touted as the largest and most luxurious passenger liner of its time, the Titanic carried over 2,200 people. Just four days later, the ship tragically struck an iceberg and sank, marking one of the most infamous maritime disasters in history. The story of the Titanic continues to captivate the world over a century later.

April 9, 1898, marks the birthday of Paul Robeson, a remarkable performer, scholar, and civil rights activist. Known for his powerful bass-baritone voice, Robeson gained international acclaim on stage and screen in productions like Othello and Show Boat. Beyond his artistic achievements, he was a passionate advocate for social justice and human rights, using his platform to speak out against racism and inequality.

April 8, 1892, marks the birthday of Mary Pickford, a pioneering actress, producer, and one of the most influential figures of early cinema. Known as “America’s Sweetheart,” she co-founded United Artists and was a founding member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Pickford’s impact helped shape the Hollywood film industry and elevate the role of women in filmmaking.

April 7, 1915, marks the birthday of Billie Holiday, one of the most influential jazz and blues singers of all time. Known for her deeply emotional voice and unique phrasing, Holiday brought unforgettable feeling to songs like “Strange Fruit,” “God Bless the Child,” and “Lover Man.” Her legacy continues to shape the world of music and inspire artists across genres.

On April 3, 1860, the Pony Express began its first mail service, revolutionizing communication in the American West. Riders on horseback carried mail nearly 2,000 miles from St. Joseph, Missouri, to Sacramento, California, in just 10 days—a remarkable feat at the time. Though short-lived, lasting only 18 months before the telegraph took over, the Pony Express remains a legendary symbol of speed, endurance, and the spirit of the Old West.
