Horses respond to who we really are — from the inside out, whether we're conscious of it or not. That's what makes them extraordinary coaching partners.

Most of us carry the same quiet belief: that as we are, we are not quite enough.
It runs underneath everything — every choice, every relationship. And it comes from somewhere specific. We feel not enough because, underneath it all, we feel separate. On the fringe. Not quite belonging to anyone or anything.
So we spend our lives trying to become what we think others want, hoping it will finally earn us a place.
It never works. A borrowed self can't feel belonging even when it's standing right there.
This November I'm holding four days about what does work — with the horses, in the high desert. A small group.
If something in you just leaned in, comment FIELD below or send me a message, and I'll tell you everything.
What if it went perfectly? What if it were perfectly imperfect?"
Liz Cutting said this to herself — out loud, in the moment — when a horse in the herd decided he wasn't going with her.
She didn't push. She didn't make it mean something. She caught the story her nervous system was already writing and she chose a different one.
And he came right to her.
This is what four years of this work actually looks like. Not perfect. Perfectly imperfect. And entirely your own.

"You're never alone."
Liz Cutting, Equine Alchemy graduate and founder of Mane + Soul, on what this community actually means.
Some things the horses teach you stay forever.

"The horse is not believing you. Are you believing you?"
Shannon Russell said this to a client recently.
Shannon is an Equine Alchemy graduate — she runs Triple HP Ranch in Patagonia, Arizona, with her own herd.
This is what happens when you do this work long enough. You start hearing the horses through your clients.

Something I've learned from horses: what looks like resistance is never resistance. It's information. The horse is responding — to you, to the field, to what you brought into the arena that you didn't know you brought.
That distinction changes everything for a practitioner. It changes what you do next.
And this isn't just true for practitioners. It's true for the client standing in the arena for the first time. It's true for anyone who has ever felt like they were pushing against something — in a relationship, in their work, in themselves. The horse just makes it impossible to look away.
More on this soon.

No matter the exercise — the conditioned self shows up. Every time.
It's that consistent. That automatic.
The horses make it visible immediately. They turn away. They act as though you're invisible. Not because something is wrong — but because you've gone into your head and forgotten everything your body already knows.
And here's what makes it so persistent — the conditioned self isn't unaware of the body. It knows exactly what the body is feeling. But rather than listen, it builds a story around those feelings. A familiar story. A safe one. Its whole job is to keep everything within a narrative it recognizes — because anything outside that feels like threat.
The story varies. The behavior never does.
The horse is the proof. Their behavior is the concrete, neutral, unchallengeable proof of your own.
And the horse simply — waits. But how he waits tells you everything. The turned shoulder. What looks like resistance is information. The eye that doesn't find you. The stillness that is not peace but absence. He isn't withholding. He is simply responding to what is actually there.
That waiting creates a crack in the automatic. A flash of recognition.
I just did that.
That awareness is the teaching.
This is Stage 1 — The Self We Learned to Be.
It's the opening chapter of the book for a reason. It's where everything begins.

The spiral isn't a sign that something has gone wrong. It's a sign that something is still alive.
Every practitioner I know who is doing this work with any depth has been here. So have I.

"You better be where they are."
That's what Garry Schleifer said when I explained why horses are such extraordinary teachers.
Because for us humans — it kind of takes a bang on the head to get it.
