Sad news today. The Tucson Chess Center is now closed. The summer time hit us hard.

This was a huge learning experience and while it might seem that the idea of a brick and mortar chess club in Tucson is not possible we feel that it most certainly a possibility.

We plan on coming back in the future; bigger, better and stronger. This may take a year or two to get everything in-line.

We had a wonderful time with the chess center. In just 6 months we hosted four chess camps, a mini-camp during the Red 4 Ed days, held numerous weekly events, experimented with different time controls and even held one moderate size tournament that was a huge success.

In all we hosted over 550 US Chess Federation rated games and countless non-rated games. We held group lessons and a few lectures.

We had a fantastic time while the club was open but manpower remains an issue and the lean months of summer have made it impossible to stay open. The three founders have lost money on this venture but not enough to revisit the thought of opening again in the future.

If you can help down the road with teaching/coaching, manning the store or are a Tournament Director and want to stay in touch for when we reopen please email us at [email protected]

Thank you for your patronage!
Steve Farmer

The Void Chess Tournament was won by IM Alexi Dulger and Robert Keough, George Andres managed to come in clear 3rd. In the Reserve Section Rick Quesada pulled off an impressive streak of 5 straight wins to take a clear first place for his section. Dr Awais Khan, thanks to a little trickery in the final game of the event, managed a draw in a hopeless position and that was enough for him to earn the 2nd place in the reserve section and Benjamin Levy scored 3 points to take home the best U1200 - congratulations to all the winners and to all of the players for coming out to help the Tucson Chess Center.

On Friday at 7 PM we will be holding a meeting of all those who wish to see the Tucson Chess Center maintain our successful ways in light of the news that founder Rob Keough will soon be leaving us for work in Europe.

This week we will start out Month Long tournament on Thursday night (there will be five rounds this month). Also, we will still hold our Saturday Blitz as usual.

We will update our May schedule within a day or two.

Thank you all who have showed their concern and support for the Chess Center
