Monsoon season officially kicks off June 15, and along with the storms come blowing dust and debris.
Those gritty winds can leave eyes feeling scratchy and irritated, and they're especially tough on contact lens wearers.
A few simple habits help: wear wraparound sunglasses outdoors, avoid rubbing your eyes, keep preservative-free artificial tears handy, and give your contacts a break on the dustiest days.
If discomfort sticks around after a storm rolls through, come see us.

In Arizona, sunglasses aren't an accessory. They're eye protection.
Our desert sun and reflective surfaces create some serious glare, which is why quality lenses matter. We carry premium sun-ready brands like Maui Jim and Persol, made to cut glare and shield your eyes from UV. Whether you're driving, golfing, or just running errands in the heat, the right pair makes a real difference. Stop in and try a few on.

Not all eye checks are created equal.
A quick vision screening, like the one at the DMV or a school nurse's office, tells you roughly how well you see. A comprehensive eye exam does much more. It evaluates the overall health of your eyes and can even reveal early signs of conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure.
Think of it as a full check-up for your eyes, not just a pass or fail on the chart. When was your last comprehensive exam?

Glaucoma is often called the silent thief of sight, and for good reason.
In its early stages it usually brings no pain and no obvious symptoms. Vision loss happens so gradually that many people don't notice until significant damage is already done. The encouraging part is that a routine eye exam can catch the warning signs long before you would ever feel them.
If it's been a while since your last exam, consider this your reminder. Early detection makes all the difference.

June is Cataract Awareness Month, a good reminder that this common condition is also one of the most manageable when caught early.
A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens that develops slowly, often showing up as blurry or dim vision, faded colors, and more glare at night. Here in Arizona there's an extra reason to pay attention: research links long-term exposure to bright sunlight with a higher risk of cataracts.
The best first step is a comprehensive eye exam, where we can check for early signs and walk you through your options.

Ocular melanoma is rare, but it’s one of the many reasons comprehensive eye exams are so important.
This type of eye cancer can develop in the pigment-producing cells of the eye, and it may not always cause obvious symptoms early on. During a dilated eye exam, your optometrist can look at the internal structures of the eye and monitor for changes that may need closer evaluation.
There’s no guaranteed way to prevent ocular melanoma, but protecting your eyes from UV exposure and keeping up with routine eye exams are smart ways to support long-term eye health.
