Prestigious medical facilities teaching students to be certified medical laboratory scientists
Emory Healthcare Medical Laboratory Science Program (EHC MLS) is a full-time hospital-based (4+1) program designed to prepare students, who already hold a bachelor degree, for the national Medical Laboratory Science certifying examination by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). The mission of the Program is to provide exceptional education and training that prepares future Medical Laboratory Scientists with the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to become leaders in the profession of clinical laboratory science. Students learn diagnostic testing basics, such as urinalysis, coagulation, clinical chemistry and immunohematology (blood bank), as well as the latest advancements and clinical testing skills in esoteric areas like molecular diagnostics, flow cytometry and histocompatibility (HLA).

There’s something special about watching the MLS journey come full circle.
Recently, Joel, Class of 2025, returned to the Emory Healthcare Medical Laboratory Science Program—not as a student, but as an instructor—sharing his knowledge of microbiology with our Class of 2027.
Earlier this cycle, his fellow Class of 2025 graduate, Osmara, joined Brandi, Class of 2020, to teach immunology. For Brandi, giving back isn’t new—she has returned to the program as a guest lecturer over the years, continuing to share her knowledge and experience with the students following in her footsteps.
They once sat where our current students are sitting. Today, they’re helping prepare the next generation of Medical Laboratory Scientists. And perhaps one day, someone from the Class of 2027 will return to do the same. 💚
This is One Emory in action—working together, sharing knowledge, investing in one another, and helping others grow.

🩸 Phlebotomy Week: Complete!
Our Class of 2027 spent part of their week learning, practicing, building confidence—and putting a new skill into action.
You might wonder: Why does a future Medical Laboratory Scientist need to learn phlebotomy? While many healthcare settings have dedicated phlebotomists, laboratory professionals may also be responsible for specimen collection depending on where their careers take them.
It's another important skill in their professional toolbox. 🧰🔬

🐔💚 Meet Clucky — the newest member of our MLS family!
The Emory Healthcare Medical Laboratory Science Program received the sweetest surprise from our friends at the Akron Cooperative Medical Laboratory Science Program — a hand-crocheted Emotional Support Chicken made especially for us in Emory colors!
After connecting with Tracy Frankowski, Program Director of the Akron Cooperative MLS Program, Angela Baxter, our director, received this very special package for our Class of 2027 and those to follow.
Tracy shared that their students have two emotional support chickens of their own that get plenty of hugs during stressful exam days. Now our students have one too — and they've officially named him Clucky! 🐔
As you can see, Clucky is already getting plenty of love. 🤗💚
A heartfelt thank you to Frankowski, Mary, Jen, and the students of the Akron Cooperative MLS Program for such a thoughtful and encouraging gift.
Gestures like this are a wonderful reminder that although our students may train in different programs, they are becoming part of a much larger community of laboratory professionals who support, encourage, and cheer one another on.
We have a feeling Clucky is going to be very busy around exam time! 😂🐔📚🔬

🎉 They’re here! Welcome, Class of 2027!
Last week, we welcomed the newest cohort of the Emory Healthcare Medical Laboratory Science Program for two days of orientation before they officially began classes on Monday, August 24.
These 12 future Medical Laboratory Scientists are beginning an exciting 11-month journey filled with learning, hands-on training, professional growth, and preparation for careers that play an essential role in patient care.
We’re excited to follow their journey from the classroom to the clinical laboratory — and ultimately, to graduation! 🥼🔬🧪

Today we’re shining a spotlight on Ritchie, one of our recent MLS graduates who went back into the community to inspire the next generation of scientists!
He led a Career Day session at a local elementary school—complete with an activity sheet, a kid-friendly PowerPoint, and lots of hands-on fun.
And he didn’t go alone—his mentee, Jaden, tagged along to help bring the world of Medical Laboratory Science to life.
