Today, June 3, is the birthday of Joe Higgs!

Joe Higgs is most famous for having taught the (very) young Wailers the rudiments of harmony. Higgs, though a successful musician, lived in the Kingston ghetto and took time out to teach neighborhood kids about music.

Higgs was parts of a duo, Higgs & Wilson, that had a number of hits during the rock steady era (mid- to late-1960s). He toured as Bunny Wailers replacement with Bob Marley's Wailers, and as music director with Jimmy Cliff. Higgs was acknowledged by both the Wailers and Cliff as being an important help in their careers.

Though he never quite found his footing in the American or European music markets, he cut a number of very good albums in his later career.

Higgs died of cancer in 1999.

Historians Got It Wrong: New Findings Rewrite the Story of the Battle of Hastings 04/24/2026

In today's Unusual Almanac: Halley's comet, famously depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry, first sighted by the hostile forces on the Channel on this day in 1066. The tapestry (usually at the Bayeux Museum in France) returns to England in September for the first time in nearly a thousand years.

Historians Got It Wrong: New Findings Rewrite the Story of the Battle of Hastings New research challenges the long-standing image of King Harold racing across England before the Battle of Hastings. New research from the University of East Anglia (UEA) suggests that King Harold’s famous 200-mile (322-kilometer) march to the Battle of Hastings in 1066 likely never took place.
