Fun facts!

On May 27, 2023 an angler fishing out of the port of Sheboygan, WI landed a 35 inch, 16 pound lake trout. The coded wire tag collected by FWS staff told quite a story: this fish hatched way back in 1984, was raised at the Iron River National Fish Hatchery and stocked on Sheboygan Reef, within the Lake Michigan Southern Refuge, on July 12, 1985.

At 39 years old, this is the oldest coded wire tagged lake trout observed by the Great Lakes Mass Marking Program so far! Lake trout are known to be long-lived, and while most observations have been from fish 20 years old or younger, we have recorded 39 lake trout at 30+ years old since 2012!

Fish tags shifted from binary codes to decimal codes in January 2000 to allow for more unique code options.

Some days are special on the Fish XTC! Today was no exception, celebrating Mortons 90 th birthday with 5 of his grandchildren. After watching all five of his grandkids successfully capture beautiful salmon, at the 11th hour, Morton landed this Dandy 21 pound king to end the trip. Cheers!😎
